Input Request: Metal Coolant Replacement For 3.0 SC Split or Solid
Hi, I am preparing to replace all available metal options from the plastic lines on both vehicles, but my question lies with the 2014 3.0 SC, I have noticed that there are two options for the rear manifolds, one is a solid design while the other is a split screw together unit. Any input which would be the better option, I have thoughts but would like additional input.
If you have watched my install videos, the pipe I used was the top one ,I posted it last year in November, but I created the video in June so the install has been over a year now ,so to your question the top one works perfect, the bottom one makes more sense because it's one piece, the only problem is quality in how the sensor is installed within the pipe itself, so that maybe trial and error, the one I have works perfect, but it's your choice
Thanks Dennis, I have been following your work and look forward to more future videos. I didn't know about the bottom one until I was shopping around looking more at price and delivery times... oh, and hopes there would be new options out for the 5.0 NA.
I definitely have to sleep on it as I see pros and cons for both but because I know about your install and a few more that used the split one, I am leaning more in that direction as I could inspect the quality of the ports.
A Few things to do when receiving the pipe is to snug all the screws check the ports make sure the sensor is tight and snug and your good to go, one thing I forgot to put in the video is to put a bottle of water wetter by Redline and enjoy your reliability, ill be putting out another video coming soon, on diagnostics tools ,
I don't want to switch direction on the post but I have been hunting for a diagnostic/programming unit so I can use on all my vehicles. I have looked at the usual brands, Launch, Topdon, Autel, Xtool and so on but couldn't find exactly what I needed. Then again, there is no one tool and you do need a few, just that the updates sure add up. Looking forward to watch it!
Look at this in-depth thread where Bydand lays it all out! I learned a ton from him and have cleaned out the rear water manifold as per his instructions.
I recommend the two piece rear water manifold so you can at least inspect the water passages.
Many pictures showing the problems and their solutions. I just had no idea until I read that thread!
I also recomend to use the factory sealing rings instead of the O-rings that come with the after market rear water manifold. The part number is in the thread above.

Thank you clubairth1, I was looking through the posts for those images and I dismissed the XK section, My Bad... Being in a cold climate area, bore size is important and access to verify is just as important. I will be going with the split version with the OEM sealing rings.
What I have noticed concerning the Thermostat swap that some have the sensor while others do not, one of my cars have the sensor on the thermostat while the other has it on the lower radiator coolant hose that connects to the bottom of the thermostat. I have seen many places and comments that state that they are interchangeable so I'm just matching what currently is installed.
I have been assuming (Yea your right I should NOT do that!) that the sensor in the thermostat housing was some sort of temperature sensor. But someone posted back that it is not? Seems odd but it was described as a heater for the thermostat which I have not heard of?
No mention of it in any manual I have but again it looks to be a late addition to the V-6? Maybe like 2018 and on?
Can anyone fill me in?
But yes they are interchangeable plus only the V-6 has these two setups as all V-8's do not have a sensor there.

My 2014 3.0 SC doesn't have it in the thermostat but does have what looks like a temp sensor in the lower radiator hose just after the thermostat connection. My 2010 5.0 Portfolio has it in the thermostat which was completely opposite as to what I was thinking. Both have the cold weather packages but the 2010 was called a premium cold weather package. Along with hoping for some additional aluminum piping to come out for the 5.0 NA, I also have to replace the heater element on the block. Here in my area, that's another $600 just for the part.
Oh, and just to add to the fun, we (As in My Wife) is/are looking at adding a 2022 F-Pace SVR to the mix to replace the 2014 AWD, so now I'm on the fence to touch the 3.0 as the pipes were just swapped by the dealership last month with new plastic pieces.
Good point about the cold weather package. That could explain it for sure.
So you have a 5.0L NA engine with the sensor in the thermostat housing? I have not seen that combination yet?

I know, I would have thought it the other way around. Only thing that could possibly make sense is that I purchased it used with already 120K on it, possibly it was already changed out by the previous owner. I'm not home but when I get back, I will look closer at it to see it the wire is taped up or actually connected to something.
