Unhappy Jaguar XF 2014, Headlamp issue

Hi All,

Recently, I noticed the passenger side headlamp stopped working (both low / high beam, but turn signal light is working). I took it to nearly auto repair shop - where they changed the Xenon bulb (D3S Hid) and it didn't work. They asked to take to some other shop to fix it as they don't know whats going on. I checked over phone with another British Auto repair shop where they quoted 850$+tax - saying some controller issue - which would cost 450$ for the parts and remaining for the labor - as they need to remove the front bumper. (I think the first shop didn't remove the bumpers)

I would like to know
1. Whether this is something I can do it myself? (Referring to this forum and like this[1],[2])
2. What are the parts I need to buy? I couldn't find proper description of headlamp parts.
3. Is it a good idea to remove both the headlights and exchange the parts to compare which is the faulty?

Thanks in advance for your tips/help. I'm a noobie with no experience on repairing cars. (except for engine/cabin air filter change! :P)

Thank you for the info with headlightsdepot. How easy it is to change it? Is there anything else I need to be aware of before changing?

They must be really good if they can diagnose it over the phone...

The ballast is screwed to the underside of the headlamp!

Hi All,

Thank you all for your reply!

I got the parts from E-Bay and managed to remove the headlight. But the problem is - even after installing the new Ballast and D3S Bulb, it is not working
Please suggest some pointers on how to proceed from here.

Thanks,
Baskar.

Newbie here.

Is there a ballast on both sides? If so, swap with the known good working one from the other side of the car. If it still doesn't work, migrate over the known good bulb.

Test the new bulb with the known good ballast.
Test the new ballast with the known good bulb.

Use the process of elimination on the easy stuff before looking elsewhere.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm considering that option as well, but little hesitant to proceed - as the removal of the headlight on the driver side seems more complicated - due to space constraints.

Are you able to figure out the issue?

Thats the funny/weird part! I ended up at an independent auto shop specializing in British cars. They initially suspected a power issue with the fuse box, but couldn't pinpoint the problem and needed more time to diagnose it. Luckily, a long weekend was coming up, so I took my car back and said I'd return it after the holiday. To my/everyone's surprise, when they reassembled everything, the headlight was working again! At least the shop was honest about not finding the issue and only charged me for the initial diagnosis. The headlight has been working perfectly ever since. I even recently replaced both bulbs myself – it was easier than expected! Once I jacked up the car and removed the wheels, I had enough room to loosen the front bumper and access the headlights.
