Default Most Pointless Retrofit Yet - TV Module

Retrofitted the hybrid TV tuner to my car recently. Before we go any further, yes TV in a car is a pointless option that nobody uses, you don't need to tell me that!

Relatively easy retrofit, the complication lies in the rear windscreen. Cars built with TV from factory have got extra elements laminated into the rear glass for the TV antenna. These connect to a ground noise filter to remove any 12v interference they have picked up from all the other stuff that's in the rear glass. These filters are phantom powered by the TV tuner module over the antenna cables which puts 5V DC onto its antenna connectors. The TV module uses 4 antennas, connected to 2 dual FAKRAs, one green and one brown (in FAKRA these are TV1 and TV2). You can't connect 2 single FAKRAs to 1 dual FAKRA without an adapter as the dual FAKRA only has 1 clip in the middle and there is plastic keying in the connector to stop you doing this, so an adaptor will be needed. To retrofit the factory antennas you would need to replace your rear glass with a new one with the antennas in, so a different solution is needed for antennas in this case.

You will need:
  • TV Tuner Module
  • TV Tuner Module Bracket (if buying from a breaker get a TV Module that has the bracket attached, you won't find it separately)
  • 3 x M4 nuts
  • 4 x Powered Antennas, preferably with a FAKRA connector on
  • Wiring to connect the antennas to the TV module. I used 2 universal dual to single FAKRA adapters
  • MOST fibre splitter cable
  • SDD engineer access
I used these antennas which are self-adhesive, although I removed the suction cups from them. They are €9 each and you will need 4. The attached cable is long enough to reach the TV tuner module, and they are designed to be 5V DC powered.

You need to align them so that 2 are vertical and 2 are horizontal in order to maximise coverage. I located 1 vertical in each C pillar and the 2 horizontal across the rear glass at very high level. The C pillar ones are obviously not visible as they are behind trim. The horizontal ones are obscured from the driver's view by the headlining and are not visible from the outside due to the black border around the rear glass.

I used these FAKRA adapters to adapt 4 single FAKRA into 2 dual FAKRA. You will need 2. There are probably cheaper options out there.

I used MOST harness parts that I had lying around to add another connector to the ring, but something like this would do. You can unplug the MOST plug from the satnav in the boot and connect this splitter, then plug 1 end back into the nav and the other into the TV. Again, there are definitely cheaper options out there, this was the first hit on eBay.

The result is pretty good - I get uninterrupted signal inside my garage (which is underground and has a reinforced concrete ceiling with steel I beams, all things which are very bad for TV signal). It is pretty uninterrupted on the move, obviously the image is disabled but you still hear the audio. It is 1000 times better than the hybrid TV tuner that was in my BMW E46.

But it is pointless
