Power-steering shudder XF 2008
2008 XF SV8, 140,000km. I am getting a shudder through the steering wheel when maneouvring at low speed such as parking or when there is a significant steering load. Wondering if this is a common / known issue? Is there a fluid filter for the power steering?
Thanks for the reply, sounds about right- I think I recall similar symptoms with a failing pump on another vehicle years ago. Next thing will be to find out what pump is applicable without having to use the word 'Jaguar' to the parts supplier. Probably a Ford part that can be bought for a fraction of the price by that name I would guess.
It's a Bosch part. Jag part number C2P14021 for my 2010 XF SC
Quick look online says it's $800, dealers selling it $600 and I can see several links with it around $200 (no idea if legit)

I had a quick look to see if the fluid level was low- thought i'd better check the obvious first- and the level is OK but the fluid looks filthy. This is probably not a good sign in itself, but I guess a change and flush of the fluid would be a reasonable first step.
That one for the 5.0 seems to be a different pump, Mine is the 4.2 s/c. A very quick scan of search results suggests the pump isn't even the same as other models of the same year, which will limit the options.
Good point. But agree you should start with a fluid flush and change as a low cost option to see if that helps.

There is nothing wrong with your car, aside from the fact that they let it out of the factory acting like that. The behavior you are describing is referred here as 'tire skip' or 'tire scrub' and is inherent of the suspension geometry designed on a shoestring budget. And by that I mean zero budget aside from jacking up the spring and shock rates and calling it a sport sedan, since the XF is just a reskinned S-Type and that suspension has been the same since 1999 on the entire Jaguar lineup only thanks to Ford that wasted billions on actual RND. Enjoy the car, the biggest part of which will be a local independent JLR mechanic that will tell you straight what is by design and not try to profit by playing dumb.

Thanks for the helpful comments but what I am experiencing with the power steering is not tyre skip / scrub.
Just wanted to give an update on this; I had my mechanic flush the power steering fluid a few weeks ago and the problem has almost completely disappeared. We were not confident initially as the problem was still evident on test drive after the flush, but it seems to have got better after several hundred km on the clean p/s fluid. So thanks for the helpful suggestions. I won't be surprised if the issue recurs, but at least for now the fluid change has helped.
