Random alarm and battery drain
Hi,
My 2.2D 2012 XF has random alarm going off when locked, both single and double locked. I have bridged the plug into the bonnet switch and there is no bonnet open warning signal anymore. The battery is new and is being charged as normal when running. Battery voltage after a short while not running is under 12V.
I've tried using my infra red heat thermometer on the fuses but as yet it doesn't seem to detect any warm fuses. This is after I open drivers door and boot and leave for 33 minutes minimum to make sure it has shut down.
I've locked it and put keys inside the house and tried the boot and doors and they stay locked so I believe the door and boot locks function as they should. I live in an isolated part of Australia many miles from any Jag dealers.
My wife wants me to sell it as she has lost faith in its reliability.
Any advice on where to next?
Cheers,
Noel

Thanks but the switch to the bonnet has been bridged and doors won't open with the car locked and fob not within signal distance. So I've eliminated ( I think) the doors and bonnet).
Like Dennis black already wrote: One of your door lock is playing up. Microswitch inside of lock mechanics sensing the locking state or wiring to the door handle sensor/switch are most common reasons for false alarms with battery draing. The vehicle systems start wake up process every time door sensors are operated, even the locking state is not changed. Very commonf issue on XF.
Do you have or do you know anybody near you having an factory diag tool SDD? By that its possible to check what caused last alarm (if i remember correctly...) Other way is to try to replicate an false alarm by taping each door by hand. (may take lot of tryes and it might still be wrong door)

I've isolated the drain to Fuse 23 in the passenger compartment fuse box. It seems to only control the centre console switches as I can access the radio via the steering wheel buttons. There is a noise behind the dash every 45 sec with the fuse in place and no noise or drain with the fuse removed. There is much confusion as to the correct fuse diagram as it appears the fuse box diagrams I can find have different functions for different fuses.
What kind of noise? A fan running? -> there is an cooling fan on infoteinment system module.
Also check if the noise is actually coming from engine bay. (injectors make high pitch sound)
By factory diag tool (SDD) there are an fuction "Vehicle reset" what have been working for many clitches. (disconnecting of battery dosent reset modern vehicles with solidstate memory CAN bus nodes)

Thanks. I've disconnected the rotating vents and the noise stopped. The 1.4 amp drain stopped until I reconnected a rotating vent and now it is still draining, even after I disconnected it again, although the noise stopped. The vents open and close as expected.
Does the SDD tool connect to my laptop and can I buy a stand alone unit?

At least you found the issue. Not absolutely sure how vent motors work by detecting the ends of their track? By microswitch or are they stepper motors what needed calibration for the track ends? Any forum member have correct info?
Maybe some of these have been replased and not calibrated -> Motor keep pushing against stopper?
Sorry i cant help on this.
SDD is an diag software what is installed on windows laptop. You also need suitable USB to OBDII port cable, like Mongoose, for vehicle connection.
Software itself is free to download but using it needs registration for JLR TOPIX service. (internet connection)
(some say that there are p*rate versions available from various wepshops in interweps what dosent need TOPIX connection)
I had determined Fuse 23 was supplying power to the battery drain by trial and error. I asked ChatGTP and it suggested an actuator in the HVAC system. I ordered a scan tool icarsoft V2 and when it eventually arrived it showed fault code B1088-88. ChatGTP told me that meant LIN Bus "B"-Bus-Off/Power #2 circuit problem. It said LIN B handles specific modules such as vent actuators and climate control. It then provided me with a comprehensive check list to determine what the cause may be and suggested I test the automatic temperature control module. It showed me how to access the ATC behind the centre console switches and provided a technical rundown of testing with a multimeter. Once I had the centre console switch panel out,I bypassed all the testing and simply removed the back panel and immediately detected the green corrosion on the circuit board. I'm not convinced that is the end of the problem but will source another temperature control etc switch panel. Once it's in hopefully my problem will disappear.
I've used ChatGTP several times in tracing the battery drain and have been impressed. For example it initially provided me with a PDF comprehensive check list for tracing the battery drain on the Jag XF. It is not infallible of course but has been invaluable in getting me organised and pointing me in the right direction.

I use forums as well but every bit of advice is subject to people's personal experience. AI can take a wide scan of advice and summarise it. I then have to use my discretion to work out my next move. It is only a tool. I use FB forums as well Jag forums, there is a lot of knowledge out there and also words of encouragement.
