Default Rear Clunk when stopping XF 2013

My 2013 XF makes a Clunk sound from tehe back when coming to a stop, usually at low speed. Sounds as if there is something in the trunk falling over or clunking, but there is nothing ion there! I assume its something in the suspension or wheel / brake assembly.

Has anyone else had this, and if so, did you find out what it is/was? Thanks for any help.

Also once in a great while when taking off from a stop a get a rapid loud "clack, clack clack" sound that seems to come from the rear right side. Anyone know what that could be? The car is only 6 months old / less than 6,000 miles.

Thanks

The clunk sound is an issue related to the gas tank. It is the fuel sloshing in the plastic tank. My does the exact same thing. Very noticable with the tank 1/2 full or more. If you are sitting in the back seat, you can even feel it in the floorpan when it occurs. No known fix at this time. I find myself braking sooner and not as hard to avoid the sound.

There is a fix for that. They squeeze baffles into the tank which I think are foam rubber. It happened to my '12 XF, I whinged and it was fixed straight away.

I am assuming, maybe incorrectly, that this would effect how much fuel you can put into the tank. That these baffles would take up space, limiting your fuel range. Any experience that you can share on the subject since you have had this done on your '12 XF would be interesting.

I had the fuel tank fix under warranty and it's 90% better, but occasionally when 3/4 full a sudden stop can create a slight noise still.
I've noticed no difference to the tank capacity or to the speed of refuelling.

Yes, I didnt notice any difference either. I guessed that they just float around on the top anyway. It's a good fix.

I have a 2012 and have had no issues with noise from the fuel tank. Guess I am very lucky.

I have the same noise from the rear end of my 2013 XF. I had it checked out when I went in for my first service and got the report back "normal braking sounds." I also have the problem of the fuel tank being difficult to fill which has been covered in other posts. Interestingly, the 2014 XF that I got as a loaner also had both issues. Do you think the two problems could be related? Might it be the actual fuel tank that shifts slightly rather than just the fuel within it? I can imagine that a slight malalignment of the tank might cause back pressure and cause the filler nozzle to click off prematurely.

Default Break Re - Alignment

I have always heard the clunk. This normally occurs on release of the foot brake.
My son has researched this for me and reliably informs me that it is the break pads being re adjusted for optimal application.
This is more audible after a certain reduction in pad depth and the vehicle is re-applying the breaks for nominal future breaking.
Try and anticipate this occurring when you find yourself breaking slightly harder than normal.

I have exactly the same issue with my 2013 F Type. It seems to be much worse when it's cold as we have had warm weather here over the past few months and it has disappeared until this week when it got cool again.

It's really disconcerting as you can feel it travel through the car and being in an F Type the noise is literally right behind you.

No, it shouldn't consume too much of the capacity..Think of it as like waterbed baffles...keeps the waves in control...except on my bed..nothing can control that kind of action..

DPK, is your shoulder sore after patting yourself of the back like that?

Hello all.

Only had my 2011 XF-S For a month and been hearing the same sound. I had presumed it was a brake disc wearing issue.....interesting to hear the fuel tank one. Tempted to take to my local dealer and ask.

It is very annoying and I also only hear it when feathering the brakes to stop at slow speeds I.e. Exiting the driveway in the morning.

Must check this with a full tank and and low tankard compare.

Ross.

I had this when I bought my 2009 XF used over a year ago. Had the dealer come to my house to listen to the noise and they told me it was the brakes re-adjusting after braking hard now and again. Not the fuel tank - interesting to hear fuel tank issues, I haven't had that - but definitely the clanking or clucking noise - doesn't do that under normal driving conditions though
