Default Rear diff service.

Hi,
I want to get the rear diff serviced on my '09 XF supercharged. I have 60k miles so it's time.

I was wondering if it's anything more than just changing the diff oil? Can any competent shop do it? I'm guessing there isn't anything too "Jag specific" about it.

Thanks,
Etip

Apparently they can't just fill it. They have to open it up to change the fluid. I tried taking mine to an indy already. I haven't gotten around to getting a quote from Jag yet.

I think the weight is 75w140 Synthetic...don't quote me, call dealer for exact spec, ...but you can suck out most all the old lube with a hand drawn oil and liquid sucker from the fill plug... use a plastic tubing like aquarium tubing to fish it down to the bottom.. (get sucker at any auto parts store)Same thing I had to do on the X-type when I did it.

Expect down time of 60 minutes...lot better than waiting on dealer for two days or who ever does it.

Since this service will be more than likely only performed once on your vehicle, I'd just go to the dealer. The Indy will probably just order the fluids from the dealer anyways. Odds are it will not be in stock at either shop. Take advantage of the free loaner from the dealer and get a free carwash to boot! If you go to the indy, you'll probably be out of a ride for two days without a loaner. IMO, not worth the minimal savings of using an indy on this one.

All good info.
Is there anything more to the diff service than the gear oil change?

None that I'm aware of..Maybe inspections for seal leaks and U-joints issues..

So I was told by my indy mechanic that the 09 doesn't even have a fill plug. I know their diffs are different than the later versions, but if there is actually a fill on these, I'd be happy to replace mine on my own too. With over 100k on it, anything I can do to extend life would be awesome.

Good grief...How in thee hell do you fill it then?..I bet there is a fill plug, there has to be., I mean how would they top it off after a seal leak?...Otherwise it's beyond me how they filled it from the factory.

I'll call my Jag Tech friend and ask him, WTF?

Thanks!
When I called Jag about having them check it for the diff failure the 09s are known for, they called it a sealed system with "lifetime" fluid, so when my indy couldn't find the filler, I assumed that was why. Good to know it's at least possible.

You're very Welcome..I have not seen a 2009's rear end...But my 2012 has a fill plug...It has to have one, otherwise after fixing a seal leak, you would have to top it off...Right?, doesn't that make sense?..It does to me.

Good Luck..you can get a lube/fluid hand pump too while your at it, to pump in the new Lube oil

I have 70k on my Jag and had the differential serviced at the dealer. They charged $165.00 for the service.

It takes about 15 minutes to do yourself on the 2009 Supercharged XF. There is a fill plug. You need to suck it out and then pump new fluid in. I bought a cheap hand pump and it worked great.

Here is one post on the subject:

There are a few other posts if you search this forum for "rear diff fluid change"
