Default Replacement Fan Unit

HI,
I have a 2010 3.0D XF Luxury saloon. Stuck in recent traffic I got the "Engine Temp High" in Amber, followed by "Engine Overheating" in Red. Fortunately, the traffic cleared and once moving it all cooled down.
My Jag dealer gave me a diagnostic code P048011: "Fan circuit short to ground"
He tested the circuit and grounds (all OK) and then advised "suspect fan failure" and quoted me almost £700 to supply/fit a new fan unit.
The fan does spin freely when I poke the vanes.
Do I have any options?
Thanks

You can do more diagnostics to make sure it's the fan, and if it is, your option is to replace it with either a new or used one. I wouldn't recommend used unless you are planning to sell the car soon. You can replace it yourself if you are handy at all. It's pretty easy to get to the fan once you take off all the air intake plumbing.

I wouldn't mess around for too long with the overheating though. You could do a lot more than 700 of damage to the engine...
