Default Service- how often?

Is there a recommended service interval other than what is displayed in the owner's manual? Only one service per year is necessary?

Yes, unless you exceed 10,000 miles (16,000 km).

Modern oils are cleaner than the older oils and so are the engines.

Jaguar specifies a conventional oil, so synthetic would improve protection somewhat.

Fully synthetic oil theoretically could go for very long mileages without changing if it weren't for the contamination problems. The oil itself doesn't break down much any more. The limits are pretty much the filters, which are being improved as we speak, and the amount of moisture contamination which is partly climate and partly short or long trip related.

So, one service per yer, and then the major service at 30K and 60K?

Apparently, on the 2011 XF there is a service reminder. Just took my wife's in for service last week at a little less that 7,000 miles and about 7 months old. There was a "Service Required" message in the IP everytime we started the car. The tech at the dealership said that the car monitors the oil and that the service could be much sooner that 10,000 miles or a year.

Short trips are the main reason for shorter change intervals. Water condensation into the oil which doesn't dry out because the trip isn't long enough to fully heat the oil is the main culprit. Water contamination of the oil is a serious issue if it gets bad enough. In the olden days there also used to be an issue with fuel contamination in cold engines but that is not as important now they all run so lean and the cold start cycle is so short.

Default Service intervals on 2010 XF Premium

According to my handbook and the dealer at the time I bought the car, the service interval is 15K miles or 1 year for the new 5.0 Litre without SC. My car has a service reminder.

I do about 13.5K miles a year and my service reminder comes on after 1 year on the dot. Although my car is a 2010 model year I purchased it in August 2009, so it has had two anniversaries. BTW the reminder is based on the car production date and not the date sold, hence I bought my car in August but the production date was May so the reminder comes up in May. I have had no earlier reminders, but I live in Texas and do about 60 miles a day to get to the office and back on a mixture of town and toll roads so I get a good mix of driving and the car gets thoroughly warm!

I believe the service intervals were a minimum of 10K on the 4.2 litre engines.

Hope this helps.

Most maintenance regimes for cars are based on miles OR calendar days on a first hit basis. Some manufacturers have put in devices to measure useage in terms of engine start-engine shut down cycles per miles run to feed in to software which will call the car for service at any mileage by putting up a message on an anunciator panel on the car. BMW seem very keen on this, and extended it the Rover 75 when they were in charge of the Rover company. This software then has to be reset after the service has been completed. My X350 has no such counter system, it's down to the owner, although note that if you extend the intervals, you may not be treated too well with a warranty claim.

I heard that BMW's Mini (the supercharged one) has a service interval of 2 years, on its Brazilian built Chrysler engine. The later Mini uses a Peugeot engine and I haven't heard if that is the same.

Minimum service intervals have been extending for a number of years now. My 1991 Alfa Romeo V6 was 1 year or 16,000 km (10,000 miles) on full synthetic oil.It now has over 200,000 km and has been serviced on that schedule from new.

My experience is the same as WhitbyXF's, my car was delivered in mid May 2010 to the delership and my service reminder came on exactly in mid May 2011 with less than 15,000 mile, although the dealership had changed the oil at 8,500 mile when I had the free wheel alignment done.
