Warranty??
My XF is a joy to drive and rarely gives me problems. Recently though the service indicator showed up on the dash so took it in for a regular maintenance service.
It's a MY 2011, and I asked the service advisor about whether the Platinum warranty was still active, and he said yes until late June. I just wanted a regular oil change because it had been 12 months since the previous one.
90 mins later I was surprised by the bill. $86 for labor, $28.5 for parts, and $75 for oil, taxes about $10/$15. A total of $202 and change. What they did was: Oil and Filter Change, and they had replaced the wiper blades, brake fluid service, as well as the multi point inspection.
When I questioned the advisor about this and said that I looked up the platinum coverage details on my phone that I saw that oil changes were $0. He said that I 'used up all my warranty service trips'... I was surprised by this and asked him how many maintenance services is one allowed and he said he didn't know-- Do you know if this is actually true?
I want to look after the car the best I can, and didn't really feel comfortable taking it to any random oil change service place. It's just when I look up how much an oil change costs on Google it says about $20 to about $70/
Even though it sounds like it, I don't want to complain, I just want to understand if you think that price was reasonable (that I didn't get "taken"). If it is, then I accept that and it's fair enough - a tax on a nice car. I just hate the idea of my naiveté about servicing cars being taxed...
On another note, given that the warranty is going to 'officially' expire late June, and my car has 36,250 miles, would you recommend me getting an extended warranty? Have you paid for an extended warranty yourself or do you pay out of pocket if you no longer have the warranty?
Feel free to give your 2 cents, I certainly won't ask for 202.

For the work you indicated that's a pretty normal dealer price. I think oil changes alone at the dealer are like around $100, which is the price you pay for a car like this (that needs a special weight, etc).
Warranties don't normally include standard maintenance items so if yours did that's a nice bonus. You should definitely get an extended warranty if you plan on keeping the car for a while. Plan to spend between $2k-$3k maybe more depending on your mileage

Makes me feel better to hear that you think that's a reasonable price!
I wonder on average how long of ownership is the 'break even' point for the extended warranty...I'm guessing if a major part failed that might make up a considerable portion of that extended warranty anyway.

Platinum coverage in Canada includes everything required: oil changes, wiper blades brakes etc. only tires are not covered and those are handled by the tire maker. Maybe us warranty is less comprehensive but I thought you got our warranty before we did.
Did you have your car serviced more often than "required"?
Oil changes are required once per year or every 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. If you do more frequent changes those would be at your cost. Wiper blades would be included in Canadian warranty no matter how often they required changing.
I smell a dealer charging double: claiming the warranty from Jaguar while getting you to pay also, sweet deal eh?
A quick call to Jaguar themselves should answer your question and get you a refund if you're entitled to coverage.
Extended warranties are just insurance (as are manufacturers warrantys in reality). The issuer calculates the total probable cost of repairs for all insured cars, adds the profit margin, and tries to sell the coverage for a price (premium). Then they fight like the devil to avoid paying for anything. One exception is factory backed extended warranties. These tend to be cheaper and less hassle because the factory isn't trying to make money but boost market confidence.
Even Ferrari offers a kind of post factory warranty as long as you have your car assessed and repaired to like new at your expense first!!!!

I did once go into the shop to have the NAV screen fixed because the green blurred/pixelated (prob water damage - though I don't know because i bought the car pre-owned).
Other than my previous visit I had only changed oil once, in about 14 months of ownership. It's hard though to know how many times the previous owner went in for service but I'm not sure if he would more than necessary!
Possibly getting charged double is frustrating and unfair. Have contacted Jaguar with details and will be interesting to see what they say. When you already buy an expensive car like a Jag, and accept it's arguably precipitous depreciation, you don't want to be charged double! Just because a customer can pay x doesn't mean it's fair. There are already enough taxes we have to pay without a double tax.
With the extended warranty, I'm sure they make already quite a bit by subscribing enough people and doing sophisticated probability models etc. I guess whether it's worth it for you depends on how 'unlucky' you are, if something major goes wrong and it's covered.
One thing I worry about about them is how comprehensive they are, how much fine print there is for them. Would be unfortunate to pay $3k or something and then some obscure import part thing goes wrong and it's not covered.. Argh

All told, even if you spend 3K on a service contract at the purchase signing, and have to replace a tranny, or, heaven forbid, the engine or do a top end gasket or seals, or ?, that 3K will look like a wise investment.
These cars get real expensive real quick in their current guise. I'd rather not find out just how expensive is expensive.
One good thing is the CPO warranty; the car I'm looking at (and if we can work the numbers out, I think I'm going to do it Saturday...which they may be more prone to do since it's the last sales day of the month) will be good till mid '19, and I can always add a wrap around from Jag to cover for a couple more years if I'm short of mileage at the expiration of the 6/100K offer.
My guideline (which is only mine...); if you can't write the check for the repair while you're still writing checks to the bank...better to take the warranty and do regular service. You just never know...better to have it an not use it than not have it and wish you did...just my $.02. Besides, offering to purchase the warranty is often an inducement for the dealer to bargain more on the trade and sales price, since they get spiff on the backend that's more profitable direct to the dealer...typically 45-50 points on the retail.
Very interesting to read your experiences with extended warranties. It seems, especially considering your experience with multiple cars, worth the peace of mind to allow you to enjoy the car without worrying about a major part failing on you.
I regularly get letters from the dealer where I take mine in for service encouraging me to take a look at the warranty, so I'm sure they want to sell the protection plans. Given that, perhaps it's worth seeing what they consider a fair price and then seeing if there's any wiggle room.
Speaking of, good luck with your negotiations Saturday, and hope all goes smoothly!

First I'll add a comment on 2011 maintenance. I think there are a limited number of service visits as I bought a new 2011 that was over a year plus old. The warranty coverage had started, so my first service for me was a 30,000 mile service if I recall correctly. I would hope that they would still replace wipers , brake pads etc if you're still under the mileage and months. Warranty should be in effect for 50,000 miles or 60 months regardless if maintenance intervals are used up. I think it is not misleading to say maintenance is covered for same time frame or miles.
With regard to extended warranties, I don't believe they cover maintenance although I know BMW offers extended maintenance at additional cost above warranty coverage. Be aware of difference. Does Jag extended coverage under certified sales vehicles include maintenance?

I too have a 2011 XF with Platinum coverage. All wear and tear items were included during my warranty period. I would get serviced whenever the "Service Requiered" light came on--whether that be on miles or time. I received four "Oil changes" they also replaced air cabin filter and wipers. Also, had two sets of rear pads and one set of front pads and rotors replaced. Jaguar required the brake pad indicator light to come on for these replacements. Lastly, they replace the battery at about 47k. In May of 2011 I sold my CPO 2010 XF after one year and upgraded to the 2011 XF Premium. Two large factors were the 0% financing Jaguar had at the time and the Platinum cover. As well as getting most of my investment back on the 2010. I was very happy with that decision and very happy with the Platinum coverage. I wish they had continued to offer it--but it was only available on the 2011 model.
Good to hear you are happy with the coverage! I definitely agree it only increases its appeal..
I did buy my 2011 xf pre-owned in january 2014, and got the oil change done free in summer 2014, which was great. Most recently the service light came on, and at ~36,000 miles with 1 month left on the warranty thought the oil change would be covered.
Though, surprised at being charged more than $200 for it..I did voice concern about that and the service manager called me and said it had 4 oil changes (done in 2011, 2012 & 2013 by previous owner, and then once by me in 2014)..
I guess 4 must be the quota and that ties in with what you said as well!!

Wow it really does sound like with XF's, it's really quite a good idea to pick up the extended warranty.
I do find it somewhat strange though that since its effectively an insurance plan, i wonder how they make money on them. I suppose maybe on the forum you might not hear from those who pay for extended warranties and don't use them (or, get as much repairs fixed by coverage as their plan cost)

>how would i do that?
Start by talking to the dealer to see if Jaguar corporate offers anything.
Then start looking at alternatives (e.g., Costco, or others). There are many providers of these sorts of plans so you should be able to price/coverage shop between them.
If you find one that seems appropriate determine two things:
1) That the plan will submit payments directly to the shop that does the work.
2) That the shop will accept payment from the insurance company.
You don't want to get in the middle of a conflict between the shop and the insurance company about who pays. Likewise, you don't want to have to be the one that files claims to the insurance company after paying the shop's bills.
When I had an '05 X-Type and the CPO coverage expired I found that Ford offered an extended plan that covered my car. My dealer was very happy to bill Ford (the Ford plan actually covered things that we exempted from the expired Jaguar plan... ;-) for the work they did. It seemed like billing Ford rather than Jaguar made no difference to them. It was just an extended warranty to the dealer.
Plus, when I traded that car in on my S-Type the Ford plan hadn't expired yet so I got a nice refund for the remaining value of the plan. I had about 1/2 of the coverage time left and I think I got about 1/2 of the purchase price back, even though Ford had already spent more that what I paid for the plan!
