Default Where to buy Smart Key

I am dreading the day I need a new Smart Key (same for the XK and XF) - and of course will probably need it in short order when lost/broken. I think the salesman said it is around $900 including programming.......

So in the interests of being proactive, can anyone suggest where we might go for a cheaper smart key. Internet searches so far have not turned anything up.

I would say for security reasons the only place you will find this is at a dealer

Only at the dealer and nowhere near $900.00
I think we charge about $250 for key and programming if you lose yours.

If you have not purchased the remote yet consider Amazon.com and type in Jaguar Factory XK / XF Prox Remote (2) (Factory Original - NEW)
by Jaguar

There are 3 offers, choose the price that satisfies you, I chose the cheaper. I will let you know what the part looks like and what I have to do to program it for my car.

When I got my car I needed a new remote, since there was only one. The remote itself was not that expensive, but the physical key inside the remote had to come from England and was the bulk of the cost which totaled $675.

I'm having a bit of trouble with one of my remotes. I received a message a few weeks ago that said the remote battery was low, so I replaced it. All seemed fine for a couple of weeks and then I started getting a message on the screen when starting saying the battery was low and today I got the orange caution and triangle on the dash saying the remote battery was low. That message stayed on the whole time I drove the car. I'll try replacing the battery once more, but I think there may be something wrong with the remote.

Car under warranty still? They will replace them for free. Same thing happened to me less than 2 weeks ago. Brand new fob for free under warranty.

Yup, if you have an '09 and still using the factory original key fobs you need to take both fobs to your nearest dealer for new backs. There is a redesign which holds the battery in more firmly.

I doubt you can buy a fob anywhere but a Jaguar dealer and have it work. I think only a Jaguar dealer can program the fob to your car and they won't do that for free.

I believe I saw one for $25 (new) on E-Bay but it still has to be programmed by the dealer.

update: I received the FOB from the Amazon.com seller only to find that the part was not new but used. I talked with the Jaguar dealer and they stated that they could program a FOB for $109.00. With that said, they also stated that if the used FOB was not undocked from the original programmed car the FOB I purchased for $59.00 is nothing more than a paper weight. I will update again once I take the car to the dealer with the used FOB to try and program.

OK....I should be more specific.....here is the URL to E-Bay where the seller is selling at least 10 brand new key fobs. They are new in original pkg.

Well what do you know......I should have read the whole thing through.....You are right. However, sometimes this is all that is necessary for a fully functioning fob (other than the re-programming) and besides, a bright and shiny key fob again could make your day!! (well, mine anyway ) Oh and BTW, Jagular, could these new cases include the new case back design that holds the battery better??

The service manager at my dealership asked me the other day if I needed a spare key... apparently she has a few extra used ones that can be reprogrammed and was willing to give me one gratis...

If you have a decent relationship with your dealership, might be worth investigating...

Pays to be on the service manager's good side... I bring her a plant for her desk on occasion...

Cheers,

- Will

So, if there's a forest on her desk should we call J D Power?

I am pretty sure those remotes can't be reprogrammed. I will double check today.
