XF Gas Gauge Issue
Hi Folks,
Has anyone experienced the following on a 2012 XF? My dealer says the following condition is normal. I am not so sure.
When going to fill up I of course turn my engine off engine but do not lock car, exit car, etc...I have never done this with any car and I have owned 22 of them from various manufacturers.
When fill up complete, I start engine and gas gauge has not moved. It will move to full after the following two events;
1) after driving for about 10 miles
2) when reopening car with keyfob after I have exited and locked everything with keyfob. After car is unlocked with keyfob the gas gauge will show a full tank but I have noticed that even this does not always work.
I have discussed this with service manager from dealership who tells me that what I described is normal. I have never had it checked out since why have them possibly cause more problems if this is the way the system is designed to work. I have never seen any other car take so long to show a full gas tank after you have filled up. These symptoms are exhibited at various gas stations that I use. Can't blame it on the pump at a certain gas station.
Has anyone else experienced this with a 2012 5.0 V8 engine model? Thank you for your input.
Ed

Mine is neither a 2012 nor a 5.0, but my '09 4.2 supercahrged if I fill up while the engine is running (or with engine off and ignition on), you can see the bar go up in realtime. If I fill up with engine off, it goes right to the proper level immediately on start (no having to drive around as you describe).
It's my understanding that there are two fuel level sensors in the tank that communicate with eachother for an "average" level. Maybe one of them (or both) is not functioning properly in yours?

I have a 2012 V8 s/c and this happened to me once that I noticed. I filled the tank until the pump shut off. When I started the car the gauge was close to full but not totally. When I tried to add more gas the pump shut off immediately. When I started the car again the gauge still showed a little less than full until I drove about 5 miles. I noticed this only once and took it as a hiccup.
Hey Ed.
I call BS.
This is def not normal. I have 2012 5.0 NA also and have never experienced this.
If this were normal, then a lot of the other owners would also be complaining about this same issue.
Get them to fix it.

I have had this problem several times over the years. The gas pump has even cut off before the tank was full. I don't know of a fix other than to estimate how much gas you need to fill your tank. The gas gauge will register full in a short time.

I don't think this is related. But it could be in some way?

Hi Folks,
I want to thank everyone for their input and I have an update to report about the problem with my fuel gauge not registering as full after filling up.
After going back and forth with e mails my dealer researched this issue and advised me to bring the car in to be checked. The previous service manager who is no longer there had told me that what I was experiencing with a very slow to register fuel gauge was normal.
Yesterday I brought the car in and left it with them.
A couple of hours ago I received a call from the service rep who told me that my problem had been duplicated and after discussions with Jaguar, they had ordered me a new gas tank.
After giving this more thought I started to wonder if this was related to any gas filler neck recalls, etc.. I wrote an e mail to the service rep asking for more specific info but have not yet received a reply. I would imagine that the defect was either electrical, fuel sending unit, etc.. and that it just makes more sense for them to drop in a new tank rather than replace individual components.
He did tell me that the new tank will be in on Friday morning and that the car should be ready for pick up by Friday afternoon. I don't think that this is a typical problem since this dealership really did appear to be stumped about the entire problem. I will provide an additional update after I learn more about what went wrong to require the replacement of a gas tank on a fairly new car with less than 15,000 miles on the odometer. This is a first for me and I have owned MANY cars from various manufacturers.

Hi Folks,
I received an e mail from the dealership shop foreman explaining why my gas tank needs to be replaced.
He states that due to the saddle design gas tank on my 2012 XF there are two fuel sending units. The fuel pump sender is serviceable and can be replaced but the other side is not serviceable. Therefore, with a problem like mine and the lack of being able to determine which sender is defective, it is necessary to replace the entire gas tank which will include both new sender units.
I had anticipated that my problem was being caused by a bad sending unit.

Just to weigh in here, there is a known problem with corrosion of the black connectors (three of them) inside the fuel tank - I recently had (and successfully repaired) an issue with my 2010 XF where the fuel gauge would drop to zero occasionally and then reappear. I'm not entirely sure what causes the corrosion or where it even happens (e.g. where the pins contact eachother or where the wires crimp to the pins) but Jaguar describe it as "fretting" corrosion, and I imagine it could contribute to all sorts of fuel gauge issues.
There's even a TSB about it (attached).
It's also entirely possible to individually test the fuel level senders using the dealer diagnostic tools (see diagnostic attached) - you could even do this yourself by measuring resistance between certain pins (I'm afraid I forget which) on the fuel tank connector, so you know if the bad sender is the "serviceable" one or not. This means if the non-serviceable one is fine, tank replacement isn't necessary. It's also entirely possible that the dealer couldn't really be bothered to do this so just ordered a new fuel tank instead.
You need a special tool (part number 310-123) to access the "serviceable" fuel sender/pump unit - this is available from Amazon etc for about $50 - I bought and used . I've attached the relevant service steps for this too - note that the fuel pump locking ring needs a LOT of force to undo, and even more to do up with a new rubber gasket, I had to get a metal pole to extend my breaker bar to get enough force on it.
Obviously this is too late for the OP whose dealership has already ordered the new tank but I'm hoping this information could help future DIYers

Escolar,
I regret that I do not know the cost of my gas tank replacement since this was covered under warranty and the work order never displayed any prices. The replacement new gas tank did correct this issue and I never experienced this problem since the work was done.
A few months ago I traded the car in for a new 2015 3.0 SC AWD and have not had any problems at all either with the fuel system or anything else.
Sorry that I could not be more helpful.
