Default XFR - X Pipe Placement

I recently upgraded from an XF to an XFR. I wanted to get the exhaust work done immediately (XFR is so quiet for being such a beast). I have Varex active mufflers from my previous XF that easily swap onto the XFR, but I also wanted to do the X pipe mod on the midpipe section. Searching through the forum I found that most members have placed the X pipe up front, right where the resonators used to be. Then I saw that Spires is selling their midpipe with the X pipe placed in the middle. I want the sound to get as close to an F-Type R as possible and I found that the F-Type stock exhaust also has the X pipe near the center of the midpipe.

What are your thoughts on the placement of the X pipe, near the front where the resonators used to be or near the center? From the minimal knowledge I have about exhausts, I hear that the further back the X pipe, the louder the exhaust.

I think My car sounds a lot like an F-type R

My setup is Straight from the manifold (no cats) all the way to the rear mufflers (Spires Stage 2)

To get the best scavenging effect (Performance Gain) you need to go XFR-S (Front res) style. For sound it's the far back mount. The rear mufflers you have will also play a large part in your sound.

My XFR makes all sorts of crazy pops and bangs when I let off the throttle. Not quite as much as an F-Type R, but very similar. I have Magnaflow mufflers with an X pipe placed right behind the catalytic converters. However, I still have the resonator in the middle of the exhaust in place to eliminate drone. I'm sure if I removed the resonator and had just the X pipe straight to the rear mufflers the pops and backfires would be much louder like an F-Type.

Sounds pretty awesome. So you deleted cats, did the Spires Stage 1 and 2 exhaust? Also curious, what was your 1/4 mile time and trap?

This is what I have heard before as well. 510 HP is plenty enough for me, I am more interested in the exhaust sound without losing any torque or HP by placing the X pipe to the rear. After doing some more research, learned that the XKR-S has the X pipe at the rear, almost near the muffler and that car sounds absolutely amazing.

Thanks for the input. I have the Varex active mufflers so I can go from quiet to loud with a simple press of a button. So I will definitely be removing everything from the midpipe. And I guess given that sound is my priority, I will place the X pipe towards the rear.

The North American spec XFR-S has the x-pipe at the front.

Does the XFR-S have the same rear mufflers as a standard XFR or are they different?

The rears on the XFR-S have different part numbers to the XFR, and they have been described as "free flowing" in some marketing material, but nobody has measured &/or dissected both versions to compared the differences as far as I know.

They are different, but how exactly? It's a good question...

Thanks Cambo, I did recall that XFR-S had the X pipe up front, but the XFR-S is still kinda quiet IMO for such an all out Jag.

Here are two videos I found on youtube comparing the stock XFR-S exhaust vs Spires X pipe fitted one:

Stock XFR-S:

Spires X pipe fitted:

Basically, the spires stage 1 exhaust removes the extra muffler on the midpipe and changes the placement of the X pipe from front to center. I am really liking the sound of the Spires fitted XFR-S, so I think I will move forward with having the X pipe fitted to center similar to Spires setup.

Got the X pipe work done on the midpipe, placed it towards the center/rear and added the Varex active mufflers. Sounds absolutely amazing to my ears. Ill post a video soon!

With both the centre mufflers and resonators cut out this will be LOUD when the Varex are switched to "sport" mode! But probably quiet enough when switched to "cruise" mode.

Wow that should sound awesome! Probably crazy loud. That video of the XFR-S with the Spires X pipe sounded very close to an F Type R. Did you go with the Spires X pipe or a different brand?

It does sound amazing! I am glad I have the Varex mufflers because I would not love it if the exhaust was always this loud during my commute to work. I did not buy the Spires X pipe because of the high cost to buy and ship it to the states. My muffler guy used a Magnaflow to fab the midpipe to look similar to the Spires one. My X pipe basically replaced the third muffler on the rear end of the midpipe, whereas other XFR owners placed the X pipe where the resonators used to be, to the front of the midpipe. The total cost to me was $320, which included the X pipe, the work involved to cut the two center boxes, and weld on the Varex mufflers.

Post a video of what it sounds like with both the open and closed setting on the Varex Mufflers I'm curious what the difference is.

Sounded good, but I don't think the XFR-S was available in that color option ...ever

The XFR-S wasn't available in black? Are you sure?
