2011 XJ supersport
There is one at a local dealer with a bad motor. It is a super sport with sc in it. Are they worth messing with? He has it priced cheap but not sure the car would be worth it after building a motor.
I thought about doing a rebuild on the motor and read through the thread on one of the members rebuild but never saw the total price for the build.
I also called the local dealer and long blocks were priced at $31000!!
thoughts or opinions?

moposcar, while I have not heard of a "final cost" for rebuilding one of these engines, I am guessing that you will be in to it for around $10-15K, assuming you do a lot of the work yourself. You are most likely looking at having to have the heads shaved slightly to get rid of any warping that may have happened through just normal use. Repeat on the block to ensure you have a flat surface. That alone could be a little pricy. Then you have the joy of finding all the parts. This isn't something that you go to your local auto parts store to get. As much as I would love to say "grab it and get it back on the road", the reality of the situation is not that. If you are one of those that wants to say "look at what I have for $XXK, what a steal", then you might be able to get that, especially saying that the motor is effectively new. But you are going to put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the kitty.
That is kind of what I thought. My daughter wants it but it would be me doing most of the work, and I gathered from the other posts that hunting parts is half the battle.
We also don’t know if the transmission is any good or not. Dealer just said engine knocks. Tow it home.

moposcar, honestly, I would be looking at an XF and going that way. Going to be slightly cheaper. THe body is much more basic compared to the XJ, so, a lot of the electrical gremlins will not be present. You have the same motor selections, granted, not going to find as many of hte larger displacement motors out there. But, the 3.0L engine in the XF would be a good fit. Then you have the price. Going to be a bit cheaper than the XJ. SO, for me, that is a win all the way around. I really only have the XJ because I made a promise to myself when I was like 14 that I would own an XJ, PERIOD. I worked hard and I now own one.
Thanks for the replies
i know nothing about Jaguars, as I have only played with mopars. However my daughter says she always liked them.
They want 1400 for the car but I’m not sure it would be worth playing with even though the starting price is right. Part of me wants to do it just for the challenge.

this was from 5 years back but for ref see attached maintenance record found from when I was in the market looking into used XJ's, it documents an engine replacement/rebuild (V6) with used parts from LKQ, looks like there was an extended warranty covering most of it
though a 2011 will be dated the intriguing part is Supersport was pretty much the top level of any trim in the states, with even higher level interior touches than XJ50/Collection https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...0/#post2610490
suppose it was US equivalent of Autobiography

moposcar, if you can pick up that car for only $1400, do it. You can part it out and get $10000. That will be almost enough to get a ready to run XJ. Sure, a little bit of work on your part, but you would be amazed as to what some of this stuff sells for. Besides, you can still pull parts off of the engine and sell them like the overflow tank, an intake, etc. If you are curious what the parts go for, look on e-bay. That will give you a good idea.

What all are you selling off an X351 that's going to make you $10K? A running example is barely worth that. Except for interior bits and the illuminated trim, these parts are worthless and Ebay sellers are always making me offers to sell their parts cheaper. Parting out cars is hard work, and with Ebay taking a large chunk of your fees it's not worth it anymore.
$1400 for a rolling chassis is a good deal but only if literally everything else is in good shape. If the interior is trashed or the frame is rusty I'd pass it by. These cars ARE like Mopars in the sense that trim level means everything and parts can be hard to source. They are NOT like Mopars in the sense that they are quite fiddly to fix. Pulling the engine out of one of these is a different level from a 69 Charger. The mess of wiring and fluid hoses under the hood will give you a headache if you are not used to working on a modern luxury car.
