I checked the manual, and it doesnt even mention a rear tow hook, just the front. Its just kind of ugly, and it definitely looks like it unscrews, but it would need some serious force to. I've seen it in some pictures of other XJs, but its hard to tell from the shadows and angles if all of them have it.
Its not a big deal, and i guess i could just spray it black or, but like i said its just ugly and weird.
Thanks guys. Thats what i assumed, but i definitely have the silver tow hook in the trunk, it looks like its never been used. The one that is attached looks much shorter and the loop is bigger. Ill get a better picture of it later.
I tried to unscrew it using a lug wrench for leverage, cuz it is way too tight to get out by hand, but that wasnt happening. I could use some PB Blast or something on it.
it looks like i was just being a little bitch about it. my buddy brought over a bigger wrench and some PB Blaster and was able to remove it. Thanks very much for saying it was reverse threaded though, i would have never thought that.
You made me look and something does not make sense??
Im glad I am not the only one. There doesnt seem to be any indication of this rear tow hook at all in the manual either.
I actually thought the same thing as you, that the trunk organizer was missing things, but the owners manual doesnt actually show anything going in those locations either. Maybe its the same one used in the XF or in Euro cars where there is something for those locations? I dont know, but for now one of them holds that mysterious rear hook.
The front tow hook on the X351 is the same p/n as the ones from the X150 XK and X250 XF, but there's no rear tow hook listed for the X351 in the parts catalogue.
The threads on the front hook for the X351, X150 and X250 are larger and a finer pitch / tooth count than the ones for the older X350 XJ, S-Type and X-Type.
I wonder if the rear tow hook for the X351 is the same as the X350, X-Type, etc...
Well Cambo you know as much or more than anyone about the XJ!
If someone can come up with a part number or even try to find one that fits the rear it would really help?
I think you (Cambo) are saying the tow loop from my old 2005 STR might fit the rear of the newer XJ's?
I did not know there was no mention of the rear tow point in the manual either?
Looking at the S Type tow loop brings up Part #C2C37723 (Old Part #XR88500 and newer part #C2P1708) and it's listed as 16mm (.629") thread diameter which is very close to the current XJ one which I measured up thread. Actual thread is listed as M16 X 3.0 LH thread.
This tells me that the S Type loop will NOT fit the smaller hole either?
The old XJ does mention and show the rear tow hook in the owners manual.
Looking further there is a 20mm threaded one that fits earlier cars before 2000 or so. But that's even larger than 16mm so it won't fit either.
It appears that Xdave has the answer and has posted it before. You are NOT suppose to use the rear tow hook that is exactly why it's a different thread! It's ONLY used by Jaguar for transporting new cars to the dealers. As part of the PDI it is to be removed and thrown away. They even released SSM70338 about it. See the attached.

Living in the US, and knowing that Jaguars are shipped by boat, across the ocean, I assume that the "tow hooks" are used to secure the cars while in transit. Does this mean that the dealers are supposed to remove the rear hook, when the cars are being prepared for delivery? The Jags that we've owned, over the years, have all had the rear hook in place.
Yeah that was my understanding based on what ive read, and during prep and such they just overlook it, and presumably most owners dont notice it and just assume its part of the car. Its only us enthusiasts that realize something is out of place.
Yes removing the rear transport hook and throwing it away is part of the PDI when the dealer receives the car from the factory. If you have one it's by accident.
