I have a 2011 XJ with the old style key fob on which the silicone rubber has detached from the chromed metal. I see that it is possible to buy replacement cases for the later fobs for about £10 but the older ones are not being sold. Aliexpress shows them but a closer look comes up with "no longer available". On searching through the forums I noted that someone said that it is possible to slightly modify the old style mechanism to fit the newer fob cases but I can't find the thread that describes how to do this. Can anyone help? Alternatively, has anyone had any success regluing the rubber to the chrome? My efforts with superglue have not been successful!
I managed to superglue both my older style keys with success about 2 years ago.
Use only good grade clue, not "market" one. In most cases markets only sell "home" grade, even from big brand like Locktite. (industrial providers and also major builders shops sell "proper ones". Be aware: They really sticks)
The prhase "less is more" have to keep in mind when working with superclue. The parts have to be spotless and all grease have to be removed from surfaces. I used toothpick to add thin layer on sides and line in the midlle. Positioned the rubber on place and secured with tape over night. Have been holding well since.
Thank you. I have ordered one of the newer fob cases and will see if I can get the old mechanics into it. If that fails I will try and find the better glue! Now trying to figure out how to prise the board out of the old fob case!
There are a thread how to mount old style board for new stule fob it in this forum. You have to cut/file bit off from one corner of old board to fit.
Sorry, i could not found it by search...
FWIW, if you don't have a metal emergency key, get one cut at a locksmith that specializes in automotive. Our emergency key is the same as used in Ford cars. The locksmith can look up the cut pattern from your VIN. This new key probably won't fit in the secret compartment of the new (or old) fob case, but as a neophobe, I like the comfort of a mechanical way to enter the car, should these newfangled electrons go awry.
with trying to get the board out of the old fob case. There must be a catch for it somewhere. Can anyone point
me at it?
Its in the thread Baltobernie dig out:
"...then pop the inside sealed layer up using a small flat blade or butter knife."
Picture under that text shows parts separed.
Thank You, yes, it just needed rather more brute force than I wanted to apply. Done it now. I don't know what the small square is that is on the back of the board where the cut needs to be made but I see that the corner of it was cut off in the photo showing the board in the new case so presumably it is OK to cut through it.
It seems to be only QR code used in manufacturing process. If you watch PCB thru bright light, you can see the circuitry wires what you should awoid. Othervise its just plastic.
All done and working fine. Thank you for your help with this, I have been living with these very unsatisfactory fobs for far too long and it us great to have them fixed.
