Key Programming Questions
Bumping up this old thread because I was told that Admin would prefer not making new threads about SDD.
SO:
2016 XJ L Portfolio.
Two keys (well fobs? Car doesn’t have a keyed ignition. They’ve got the lil dummy key to unlock the door.)
Both have been water damaged. One went through a whole washing machine cycle and is now pretty kaput, buttons don’t work, car says “key not recognized”. It will start the ignition if you put it in the super special exactly right snowflake spot to the left of the steering column.
The second key was dropped in a puddle or something, but after being dismantled and cleaned with alcohol and a new battery actually seems to be functioning just fine.
so my question: according to this thread the create a new key you have to erase your existing key (scary!) to reprogram both. Correct? OR, if you have 2 keys you can program a third.
In my situation do you think we could just program a third key without erasing them? Or is the bum key too far gone at this point?
**** This question is kind of getting ahead of myself because we haven’t actually set SDD up yet, but are planning on it.

whitejerabias your car is a 2016 XJ which is in a different forum. Your key/transponder setup is WAY different from these older XJ's. So don't confuse yourself reading what was discussed above because it does NOT apply to your car!
I have asked a moderator to move your message to the right forum where hopefully you will get answers about your model of XJ.

Hi whitejerabias,
I have moved your post from the forum for the X350/X358 to the forum for the X351, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 2016 XJL. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.
Cheers,
Don

I will admit to feeling a little fumbly navigating all the different forums (and a whole new kind of car, lol 😳 )
You can create a third key without erasing all keys, and you also need only 1 active key to do so. I went through a similar situation where I had two keys programmed to the vehicle but only one key was available/working. Select "Security/Personalization- Add New Keys" in SDD. It is a bit scary. The ignition cycles on and off automatically, the clock winds backwards, the dash goes completely dark at times and at one point the car appeared to not recognize either key while executing the SDD commands during the process, but at the end of the process I had two working keys with no issues.
When sourcing new keys, you need to buy a virgin key that hasn't been paired with a car/KVM before or it will not be able to be paired with your car. They're about $100 from a company called "CarAndTruckRemotes", which was recommended to me by another forum user, but they come in OEM packaging.
Ensure your SDD has internet access while running this command as it has to download new KVM files from the internet and then download them to the car. A recent update from JLR blocked internet access for Win7 and earlier installs, so you need a Windows 10 install to do so.
