I have 2010 Jaguar XJ (Europe version, since I live in Poland). I decided to update navigation system so I bought update on some website. Got 4 .7z files, unpacked them onto USB stick. I start engine, put stick in USB socket and... nothing happens.
USB stick is rather ok, since when I put some MP3s on it they play fine in Jag. Files and directories on USB stick match the list of provided by map vendor. Also tried other USB stick - same (none) results. Tried starting car with USB in socket, removing and inserting at different times during drive - nothing.
Any ideas? Can map update be blocked in car config?
Assuming the "some website" isn't the genuine JLR website and that of the genuine source, it sounds like you bought some bootlegged copy.
Contact the person/website you bought it from.
If they sell a bootleg copy, they should know how you can get around the security settings of the single-source vendor that officially sells it.
And if you DID get it from the original vendor, your best bet for getting it to work right is still to contact them for tech assist.
I attempted (once) updating the maps in my (then) 2011 Portfolio: it was a very hit-or-miss operation. I tried multiple times with no luck, but eventually - just as I was about to give up, to be honest - it finally started to work. It is a horrible procedure, and I am glad that it has been revised in the more modern cars.
I agree with 12JagMark that you bought an unauthorized copy. Yeah, that site looks legit, but there's nowhere in the ordering process that asks for your VIN number. That's a clue the product is not geniune. Here is the correct site for your application. Like Cris, I found the installation a bit confusing, but was ultimately successful.
The update will work only from quality USB drive. Best bet are Sandisk Ultra. There are 22 - 23GB of data on update what the system will read thru USB1.1 connection. (11MB/sek) Therefore if you use an pen drive what don´t have quality memory controller, the system will hit timeout reading files and system will not start the update. (playing MP3:s don´t have same requirements)
Also remove all other USB:s, attach only the one with updates. Be patient. It can take 3-5min to start.
When the update starts, do not remove the USB untill you reach 100% and system informs that update are done. (first 0% to 5% can take 15-20min, so be patient)
Note: Shuting down the engine do not turn the system down, even the display goes dark. Do not remove USB. If the update give an error, shut down the car, close doors for >15min and update will continue again when you start the car.
After 100% system will say that press Ok to start using the maps, however: You can´t. Just black maps. Again turn car off, lock doors for >15min and re-start your car. Voilá.
Be aware that even with the proper update it can and does take days to complete. If you drive long times it will be much faster. Yes it looks like nothing is going on but many times it's working but no way to really tell.
As posted above it is suppose to stop and start automatically with the cars operation.

They actually ask for your vin in the item description. So it probably is at least made for your model only. Even if with it is with key genetator.
The update issue is probsbly, as mentioned above- time related. As i read most threads about it here, the update stops when car is turned of, and resumes after starting again. Some got to put usb many times to start updating.
I also looking for that kind of update. Maybe will also try it out.
Have you managed to update your nav maps?
i bought the map update download from similar seller for £89.
Loaded it to usb. Has to be FAT32 format.
After insertion it asked for activation code, and when entered, the update began.
Update takes about 8-10min for each 5%.
If anyone interested, the 2.1. Update is same as Volvo. So the updates are downloaded from Volvo servers, using original app, called Sensus, which lets you download it to PC or straigth to USB
Yes, as for now it is the last update for that system. And no more official updates are planned anymore.
But i see some parts of roads are not updated in the town, even if roads were rebuilt at 2012-2015.
Probably not all Europe areas were updated completely even on 2020 official maps.
Nether the less, i'm glad i went for that update for £80.
Maybe someone someday will find the way to convert newest maps to old file system as graduation project.
I have updated my 2010 Supersport with the update from Satnavishop, it's the same files as the genuine version and they evidently have some sort of bent way to generate the activation codes. It was very fussy about seeing the stick and updating, but in my previous 2010 Portfolio I could NOT get it to see the stick no matter what I did, apparently some early cars really played up and the SS has a VIN number a few thousand higher than the Portfolio.
I'm going to try the stick that worked in the SS in the Portfolio when I see my friend who bought it, if that works it's clearly some sort of magic stick and if you PM me I'll post it to you when we're done. As others have said it was a long winded and somewhat nervewracking process, at once restart it said it was 3273% complete....
I also had the percentage glitch, but that one fixed after car restart. And update continued
Update info changes every 5% that takes approximately 7-8 minutes. Have been driving for 3 days with short runs around town, till the update finished.
Its important not to forget, that usb stick has to be formated in FAT32 format to be readed by navigation. You can copy your files to PC and transfer those to other usb stick activating it with the same code you get for your car.
So good luck trying to update your nav.

My 2010 are quite early build based by VIN. Update been worked, slow but still, in everytime. I noted that if you have any other usb drive or device connected to the 2nd port, the update usb drive are not regonised. I am quite happy with 2020 update. The response typing the addresses improved a lot.
