Default 1997 DD6: Transmission warning light

Greetings all, hope everyone is well.
Just wanted to run this one by you in case its a common/known problem.
My 1997 DD6 seemingly does not like inclines. Twice when I've gone up inclines of length (I live in Switzerland and we have some of these roads curving up and up the mountains/hills!), the orange transmission warning light comes on.
Gear shifting feels a bit jerkier than usual. Overall though, it feels like the car is holding 2nd gear much longer than usual - which isn't such a bad thing on those inclines.
After rolling back down the hills and joining the motorway, the gear changing felt smooth/normal once again (although the warning light has stayed on).
Last time it happened I left the car parked overnight and the next morning the warning light had gone off.
Guessing all is fine and I should avoid cliffhanging with such an old car!
Anyone else aware/experienced same?
Cheers,
Matt

The GM transmission does have a temp sensor inside

This may trip as the fluid is " worked " harder or a sign of a worn torque converter

Proper service level ?

This may be critical on a slight incline angle

You will see your shift speeds of the GM transmission on page 159 of the large vehical service manual

The GM transmission does not use 1st gear unless you have more the 75 % throttle depression in the normal switch mode of the normal / sport switch

This is a note on page 156

You will see this doc link on / in post # 4

G’day Matt,

My car, which has over 350,000 kms on it, developed a tranny problem years ago and got progressively worse until I needed to get the tranny completely rebuilt.

Have a look at this thread and my post, look under watto700, in particular which will help you understand what happens to your transmission as it gets older.

Your transmission is a General Motors 4L80E and any one that services GM transmissions should be able to work on it. If your problem has only recently occurred then you might be able to have the valve body rebuilt and save the cost of a complete rebuild.

Cheers,
Jeff.

I second Jeff on a valve body rebuild. Mine with all the upgrades and new solenoids included was only 250. The only thing I would add is to back out the EPC solenoid set screw about 1/4 a turn as its tuned to shift a bit too firm for a luxury. These transmissions are standard on heavy trucks and vans. Only other thing you probably want to do is replace the two speed sensors. All of this can be done with the exhaust in place but a real pain. I almost started to remove mine but got a bit spooked I might open up a can of worms there. You won't need a new gasket either, one on it is reusable. Get one of those paint buckets with measurements on the side so you can get a good estimate on how much fluid loss during the change.
After this my transmission has never shifted better and no more transmission lights or associated P codes. If it is a temp sensor issue (think that would throw a code?) its built into the wiring harness on our cars. Least it is on my 96. That harness isn't cheap as its a Jaguar part not a GM part.

To add, 20 mins later happened again. This time a massive bang, 6 inch chunk of metal plate comes flying out, and now the problem is constant. RAC on way

6 inch chunk of metal plate flying out sounds a bit terminal, hope the car survives...
