Default electric key fob question

Hello all, I continue to go through sorting out my x305 and was watching a customer handover vid on youtube this weekend that has remote access, alarms etc. All I have is one manual key, hadn't even thought about this until I saw the vid. Any idea if these were common and where I could get one for not too much $$? (I have more important things to spend on like ride quality).
Cheers

Depends on the frequency of your SLCM.

You need to figure out what frequency you need.

Yes thanks I read your v useful bulletins. Mine is LWB Manufactured 03/96 vin ...778398 so assuming 433mhz ...
I had a good look at the rear screen top inside and out but don't see any SLCM identifiers, unless I'm looking in the wrong place?

The SLCM should have the frequency printed on the label.

Although Jaguars for the US market are 315mhz, I recall reading about a small number of V12's sold there with the same 433mhz security system used throughout Europe and most of the World.

This seemed very strange as the reason for avoiding 433mhz had to be preventing interference with some other system(s) used in the US. Further reading confirmed that the 315 band was relatively uncongested but 433 is in the middle of the amateur radio band range. Use of the 433 band was and is permitted for low power equipment such as garage door openers and remote controls.

It did then make me wonder why Jaguar therefore didn't simply use 433mhz to standardise the SLCM across World markets.

Either way they had to make 314mhz remotes for hong kong and other select markets.

The frequency number is in very small numbers on the remote so is a question for a Ebay seller

Got my extra fob real cheap as the cars coming into the salvage yard and they sell a lot ( as in large collection ) to someone that specializes in fobs like wheel resellers

The Saab uses the same fob in the same years , look for frequency

There are repair parts on Ebay

https://www.ebay.com/itm/micro-switch-repair-remote-alarm-key-fob-jaguar-XJ6-XJ12-XJR-X300-saab-9000-900/323876805997?hash=item4b688fdd6d:g:MGoAAOSwgS9dR~a y

and

https://www.ebay.com/itm/fits-Jaguar-remote-key-fob-X300-XJ6-XJ12-2-Silicone-Repair-key-Buttons-1SET/193377965274?hash=item2d063994da:g:3R4AAOSw9ZdXKuh t

With the SLCU a " Hard Reset " solves alot of problems as the SLCU is hot at all times from the battery

In opening up the fob ( special trick ) you can clean the electrical contacts including the battery recepical with a pencil eraser which is abrasive enough

The hard key does not have a RF chip in the US until 98 with the X308 series

Hi Oliver,

I'd go for the Saab remote. They tend to be cheap and more plentiful compared to the genuine Jags. They even look similar. 433Mhz is correct for your car.

That is an interesting video... that guy looks like me back in the 90s. But he doesn't look very excited about the new Jag V12! I would have had a big grin through the whole video.

Thanks all,

Haha yes I'm the mad guy cutting the good paint back in teh mornings before the sun hits and Dremeling off the old varnish form the steering wheel and gear knob before giving it lots of coats of Epifane with a mad grin on my face. The neighbors are baffled as the roof paint is damaged so it's all a bit Jekyll and Hyde. I'm painting the roof and other sketchy parts next month. I'm superstitious - I haven't dropped the front end yet, or fixed the gearshift safety switch or the mystery belt noise on start up.(Probably not harmonic balancer) but concerned if I do too much beauty work the car will blow up.
I'll look for a Saab clicker, good call thanks for that.

PS I have six Beatles CDs in the trunk changer (my wife likes them) but because the head unit is Kaput we only get random bursts of Beatles when I go over bumps (which is why the front end rebuild will be happening this fall) or when the 'premium' sound system feels like working...

The original Jaguar / Alpine AJ9500A on both standard and premium system with the CD player stereo head can be modified to negating the cassette player input and putting in a Auxiliary jack to play any device you want

This is not those cassettes with a jack on it

Thanks! That's a useful link. I'm just installing a
Kenwood Kenwood
hidden bluetooth amp in my IH Scout II, would love a similar setup in the xj12 so the phone connects to a receiver in trunk where the CD changer currently resides

I did this on my XJ8 and you have to use a blank tape to get it to work and then the sound quality was real bad. I found one of those cheap cigarette lighter FM transmitters that connect to bluetooth from ebay had better sound quality.

I got the $180 buck Kenwood 1177524 Compact Automotive/Marine Amplifier Class D Kac-M1824BT, 180W RMS, 400W PMPO, 4 Channel wired up in my IH Scout this weekend. i haven't got good speakers wired in yet (I'm putting them on the roll cage at head height as it's a pretty rowdy vehicle with roof off) but it seems a good solution and very easy to connect. With no previous audio system it's basically 3 operational wires: 12v to unit, 12v to control wire and ground. Wiring of speakers is same as always, nothing unusual there. Once live (there's a separate issue of a relay and or on/off switch to prevent parasitic drain) you pair it with your phone which is then your controller and media source. There is a small wired control panel but you don't really need it. You can also wire through a head unit but I like the idea of it being hidden in the boot/trunk. Depending on how the Scout works out I may repeat on other cars, seems a great solution and the unit is very small. I will almost certainly put one in my series 1 xj6 next.

Saab remotes are all 315. Jag crossed over to 433 early in the 96 model year.

433 remotes are pretty common but not $20 cheap.

OOPS! Sorry, my bad. Saab remotes are all 315. I think I will get a Saab remote for my own 315 car.

"Long wheelbase vehicles beginning with VIN 758729 are equipped with a
complete 433 MHz system. Short wheelbase vehicles were changed to the 433
MHz system starting with VIN 759614. The 433 MHz was introduced to give
improved reliability and more consistent performance."

I've noticed that my 315 remote loses connectivity on occasion, but always comes back on its own after a drive.

Happy Weekend all,

I finally got an ebay remote and tried to program it, but going through the doors unlocked, trunk open, ignition in accessory stage, rock the valet button 5 times sequence I'm not getting any 'chirp' feedback to even begin trying to connect the remote to the car.

I've checked the security system fuse (ok) and am now wondering if the valet button continuity is suspect. The other possible culprit is that one of my rear door lock solenoids doesn't fire, so I have to operate it manually. If I've locked the car and then open the rear door to push the lock button down the sidelights flash, suggesting that the security circuit may be compromised by this non electrically functioning door lock mechanism.

My plan is therefore to pull the valet switch and test for continuity, and to take the rear door apart to see why the lock isn't functioning electrically, which I need to do anyway.

Does anyone have any advice on why I'm not hearing the alarm chirps and anything else to test?

Thanks!
