Hot (re)start issue; click, no-crank
The rebuilder (different guy this time) said the planetary gear is stripped. Replacement parts were available only out of Michigan, so it's at least another week until I get the starter back.
NBD. The XJ12 is my only car, but I only put about 1000 miles a year on it.

NEW, as far as I know, is NLA unless I went with an aftermarket lightweight (Wosp, Powerlite?) type. The last rebuild was $255. SNG Barratt is the only vendor I could find that purports to have access to reman originals, but on special order for $330, and I'd have to send in my core.

G'day John,
There has been a gear reduction starter on my V12 since I got it in 2006 and I've had no trouble with it.
I did have an intermittent no crank problem with it for a while but part of that problem was slightly loose connections on the battery cable between the battery and the starter and alternator. I cleaned and tightened all of those and that made a huge difference. Those loose connections also meant that the battery was not charging properly.
The only other issue was corrosion in the connector under the RHS inlet manifold which was remedied when I replaced that connector completely. No starting issues since.
Cheers,
Jeff.

Jeff,
This is the sad thing: I think I misdiagnosed this problem from the start (pun not intended) of this thread. Chances are, the previous owner needlessly fired the parts cannon too, just for a lack of targeted abrasion.
Oliver,
Thanks for the documentation. That PDF is, and has been, profoundly helpful.

G'day John,
I initially made the same mistake and thought my starting problem was the starter motor so I took it off and rebuilt it which made no difference. That then led me to investigate the whole electrical supply and control circuitry where I discovered the problems I mentioned above.
As an added extra thrill because my battery wasn't charging properly I blamed the alternator and removed and rebuilt it to no effect. Fixing the wiring issues solved the problems I was having.
They say live and learn but I dunno whether I have learn't much. Hopefully in future I will investigate any issue more thoroughly to find the real cause.
Cheers,
Jeff.

Starter is back in; waiting for exhaust paste to set up before trying it. The new Bendix drive's overrun clutch actually turns by hand in one direction. The previous one didn't, which probably caused the horrible noise and stripped planetary ring.
EDIT: Damn it. The overrun noise is exactly the same.
But on the plus side, the car is mobile at least for now, and I seem to have gotten the exhaust well-sealed.
I should have bought a new starter.
