Default Rebuild startermotor reference data

i removed the starter motor while busy with a clean-up job on the front left side of the enginebay. Now the alternator and steering pump was out I thought I had good access to the starter. It turned out I only had good access to the front bolt of the downpipe to the exhaust manifold. I had read on this forum what a pain it was to remove the starter so decided to have it rebuild while it was easier to get to with everything out of the way.

It turned out that the core of the startermotor was seriously cracked.

I searched for a used starter and use that core/rotor/armature to replace the cracked one. The rebuild company discouraged me in doing so as was the same advise of a well respected Jaguar specialist. So the search for a new rotor started and it seemed useful to publish my findings on this forum for future reference. The number printed on the starter housing itself can be used for a google search. Startermotors for XJ40, XJS and X300, all with the 6.0 litre V12 are interchangeable as are those of the late V12’s in series 3. So I’ve been told if you want to go the route of using the rotor of a good used unit. Cross reference will also lead you to FiatMarelli that uses the same rotor.

I ordered a armature with Wagendass in France and I believe it was their last one since the site now shows it is no longer in stock.
I hope this information will turn out to be useful to anyone of you.
