Default 09 VDP Rear Upper Control arm thread

Hi. In a bit of a pickle here. Replacing the rear wheel bearings and the left one just slid off, but the right one was not interested in coming off. Of course you can't undo the nut without another small wrench holding the bolt itself. Not a great design in my opinion. Anyway, I eventually had to grind the bolt off which of course took a chunk out of the bolt thread. Would anyone know if the bolt can be replaced or do I need to replace the whole control arm?

Much appreciate any help.

Peter

Looks like you will need to replace the control arm, they are not all that expensive.

Ouch ! I would certainly not be putting that back on !! I reckon you've ground away about half the thickness, and probably reduced its strength by at least 50%. Parts like this are mission-critical.

That's what I thought. Grinding it off seemed to be the only choice left. A more delicate touch next time I guess.

Thank

I thought I would drive on it for a while over some bumpy roads. LOL. Yes, you make a good point. I am waiting on a part now. Sigh...

Appreciate it Fraser.

I'm puzzled why you didn't use a nut splitter. This would have enabled you, (for the price of the nut splitter), to remove the nut fairly easily.

Never had luck with nut splitters. I usually grind slots on both sides with a Dremel tool and hit it with a chisel so it cracks. Same basic idea as nut splitter, but this method works for me.

Default Nut splitter?

First time I have heard of such a thing. Sounds lime something I do at Christmas time.

Compressing the ball joint between the end of the 'bolt' and the arm which stops the ball from turning may have worked.

Plus heating the nut if needed.

I hadn’t thought of compressing it. Genius!

Will know next time.

thanks. Peter
