Default 2004 XJ8 Trailer Hitch

Has anyone installed a trailer hitch on their 2004 and up XJ8? Need to be able to carry an electric wheel chair. I've only found them for 2003 and older. Open to having one made, but don't want to reinvent the wheel.

THere was one available in Europe, but not sure about the USA. It came with a special wiring loom, and there was an input to the air suspension, I think. One problem with this aluminium saloon is it is very light, (lighter than the S-Type, so cannot tow much weight, at least according to the UK regulations.

Hi.

I have a detachable tow bar fitted to my 2004 XJR over here in the UK, here is a link; Thule - BMA

The part attached to the body is covered by a removeable panel on the lower bumper but I have read that the panel is hard to come by these days, although one could be made I suppose. There is an electrical unit to adjust suspension height fitted in the trunk too. That's probably a Jag' part.

I have towed both 2 and 4 wheel trailers long distance a couple of times with it and have had no problems. In fact, it's fun beating other cars away from the lights with the trailer on tow.

Regards. Les.

I was looking into this too...... according to U-haul, the XJ requires a custom made hitch, which they would be willing to do for free if you can take the care to Arizona and leave it for a month ! (I am assuming this offer is only open to the first person who volunteers, then they would be able to make a kit and offer it for other XJ owners)

I wonder what the wire to the air suspension does..... ? maybe just tells the system it has a trailer on so firm the rear end up ??

The coonection to the air suspension most likely disables the highway speed lowering feature. I'm looking for a hitch too. Good shock value, towing with an XJ....

Do you have a link to the towing hardware, aside from the Thule towbar? Thule's fit guide doesn't include the X350 series XJ, only the X-type and XF. How did you get your car equipped?

The unit in the trunk disables the reverse park sensors too.

Great! Thanks. Of course, it is much more work than I thought, and cutting into the bumper was not what I was hoping for (I thought the receiver would go under the bumper so you wouldn't see anything when you took the receiver off). It would be fun to pull my boat (would certainly get weird looks down at the launch ramp). But this looks like a lot of work and a bunch of money.

Gribble, I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you,but you might be able to help me with my problem. I have a 2000 XJ8 and am looking for a hitch. Can you please let me know where you found the hitch for the 2003 and older. Do you know if the hitch is attached to the two vertical holes(the ones that hold the stock bumper) or to the plate with the 4 holes? Thanks ,I hope you find what you're looking for!

Not to mention that Mayhem7 has a 2000 year which put it in the X308 model range.
Likely a different towbar solution as the chassis might have some differences from the X350 2004 onwards this thread was originally discussing.

Mayhem7, try posting a question in the X308 forum to see if those members can give you some assistance.
