Casper, can you comment on the transmission line install? Mine are due to be replaced. My indie,very competent and honest, mechanic says this is going to be costly.

 

Competent indie will have no problem. Only thing is when putting it back just unclip the 3 plastic clip and put in the top and then the bottom one and put the clip in back once it done. There is no way for the complete setup going in without lifting the engine. Also have aout a quart of Lifegard6 on hand because the line change will loose about half a quart or so of fluid.

 

As long as you have the equipment and scan tool to check the trans fluid level...

 

How doable is this repair if one used flexible hoses with the correct fittings on the end? Are the fittings pipe threads or Jaguar specific?

 

CASPER can you take a close up picture of the ends of your pipe lines so we can see what they look like.

 

They're pretty specific looking to me. The cooler ends are simple stab-in with an o-ring and a threaded ferrule to keep it secure. The transmission ends are more intricate CNC type designs with o-rings. One bolt attaches a plate that holds both the ends in the trans. The way to repair the old lines is to cut out the leaking flex joints up front. The transmission fluid resistant line can be purchased at places like AutoZone, but they will warn you that the joints you are replacing are a high pressure type. I believe only one of the lines is.

This can supposedly be overcome with two heavy hose clamps on each end of the hose patch. In the end, I just went with new lines from Jaguar. My hope is that they will hold up for another 10 years, in which case the XJ will long since have been replaced with an XK. If I had it to do over again, I would have carefully cut the pressure fittings apart with a dremel and simply replaced the flex parts with new hose and double clamps.

Complete line replacement doable in a homeowner's garage if you do the following:

• Raise the car up as safely and high as you can with heavy jackstands. I bought some 6 ton stands just for this job, and I've used them a bunch since.

• Drop the steering rack. It sounded like a pain the first time I heard about it, but the rack doesn't come off the car and no alignment is touched. Three bolts and the rack lowers down and gives just enough room to snake the lines through one at a time.

I might try the flexible house route. My tranny has finally quit leaking , which tells me it's terribly low on fluid. I really should do something soon.

Yes it is. Just bought a set from Jaguar dealer in South Carolina--$200 delivered to Florida.

 

Yep, that's the going rate for replacement lines. (I found mine for $185 shipped)

I noticed my original trans lines had a ford part number label but the replacement lines have a Jaguar Part Number label (C2C40418)

Maybe better quality??
