Default Adaptive Cruise Control Not Working

I know that this has been covered in other posts, but none of them covered the specific symptoms of my car. I have tried everything that I have read on this forum to repair this issue, but so far, all I have achieved is complete frustration!

For over a year now, when I start my car and drive approx. 100 yds. the message "Cruise Not Available" shows up on my instrument panel along with a yellow light. I cannot clear the message or reset it. My cruise control does not function.

I tried stopping my car, turning off the key, placing it in neutral, and starting it without touching the brake. Again, no good.

I replaced the brake pedal switch under the dashboard. It still doesn't work.

I checked all of the bumper parking sensors and they all tick.

I disconnected the radar unit behind the front bumper, cleaned the connection with electronic cleaner and reconnected it. Amazingly, for one trip, the cruise control worked!

I tried to clean this same connection again, but the cruise control still failed. Two times, while driving on very hot days, the cruise control came to life and functioned as it should for no apparent reason.

I am at my wit's end. PLEASE someone help me out! I have been a loyal follower of this forum since I bought my Jag. If you can't help me, nobody can!

XJRTrooper,

If you leave the Radar unit disconnected, does it give you the same "cruise not available" response?

It would be nice if another member were close to see if you could take the Radar unit off their car and test it on yours although I am not certain if this is a part that requires a WDS or SSD to marry the part to your car.

A second option would be to source another Radar unit from ebay or a used unit from a salvage yard.

Have you had the OBD codes read to see if any are being set?

Hi XJRTrooper,

Like u102768 I agree that you need to have the Diagnostic Trouble Codes scanned. I can virtually guarantee that you will find that some have been logged, and they will help you focus on the part of the system where the fault exists.

We've had the CRUISE NOT AVAILABLE warning since we bought our '04 a year ago and I've been slowly working through the various possibilities. The codes stored in our ECUs are:

C1292
C1293
B1342
U1262

The C1293 has to do with the alignment offset angle of the ACC module. I have re-leveled it per the manual with no change.

C1292 indicates ACC module blockage, but I've cleaned everything in front of the module with no change. I have not yet tested with the chrome trim removed, which worked for another member.

B1342 indicates ACC internal module failure, but this is intermittent on our car, and since SDD can communicate directly with the ACC and knows when I disconnect the ACC, I'm not ready to accept that the module has failed.

I sometimes have had codes that indicate CAN bus failure between the ACC and ECM and I need to do the pinpoint tests to see if I can find a fault in the harness that may be causing a CAN communications problem.

If you can get the codes on your car scanned you'll at least know what the various ECUs involved think the problem is.

The fact that your cruise has operated intermittently seems encouraging to me - perhaps it's just high resistance somewhere in an electrical connector or at a ground. Have you cleaned the ground behind the left headlamp assembly? That's the one used by the ACC module.

Cheers,

Don

Thank you for all of the quick and helpful replies. I did hook my car up to a regular OBDII scanner and no codes were present. Since the problem is intermittent, I don't think the radar module is bad. I think my next step will be to clean/check/tighten the ground behind the headlight assembly. Does anyone have a photo of what this looks like and where it is exactly located?

I don't think that a generic scanner will see the cruise control codes. You will need a Jaguar specific one.

Unfortunately that's right, you will need something that can read the non standard Jaguar codes, like SDD, WDS or AutoEnginuity.

Hi XJRTrooper,

I've been trying to upload a photo of the ground to Photobucket so I can insert it into a post, but it's not working for some reason. If you want to send me your email address via private message I'll email you the photo.

Cheers,

Don

Hi XJRTrooper,

You've only ruled out one possibility of many, so it would be most expedient if you can have the stored fault codes read with a scanner capable of reading the Jaguar-specific codes.

If there is not a good independent Jag mechanic or Jag dealer in your area, you may want to consider purchasing a Mongoose or Ford VCM type OBD II-to-USB cable and a copy of outdated Jaguar JLR SDD software (I have versions 131.03 and 134 and so far I find 134 superior). Search this forum for tips on where to acquire these items affordably. You will also need a computer, ideally a laptop, that either currently runs Windows XP Pro or on which you can set up a virtual machine and install XP Pro (I'm running XP Pro in a virtual machine on a Win 7 laptop - not hard to set up).

Cheers,

Don

Don,

Thanks for the reply. I did rule out more than one possibility. I replaced the brake switch, cleaned the grounds, cleaned the radar box contacts, checked the bumper parking sensors, checked and cleaned the wheel sensors, checked for codes using a traditional OBDII reader, prayed, prayed, and prayed again. It still doesn't work!

Does anyone have a Mongoose or other type code reader and software that they want to sell me?

I've had it!

Hi XJRTrooper,

Out of curiosity, did you replace the Green/Black brake pressure switch or the Blue/White cruise inhibit switch?

Question

I forgot to mention, when I place the car in reverse, I get a long beep, then the red parking assist light above the windshield illuminates. Could these two problems be related?

XJRTrooper,

To my knowledge, the ACC system is completely independent from the Parking Assist system. Since the parking sensors only work within a few feet of the car, they wouldn't be much help while driving at speed. The ACC module contains the Forward-Looking Radar (FLR) which provides the necessary signal for the Forward Alert system.

I recall reading somewhere in this forum that the long beep indicates a malfunction in one or more of the park sensors. If I remember the method correctly, you can do a rough check of the sensors by turning the key to position II without starting the engine, set the park brake, then put the gear lever in D to test the front sensors or R to test the rear sensors. Get out of the car and listen for a soft "clicking" sound at each sensor. Any sensor that is silent is not working, either due to an electrical problem or the sensor itself.

Hopefully someone will correct me if my memory is faulty!

Cheers,

Don

Apologies, but I removed them from PhotoBucket for the time being as there are some issues that need to be tended to with them. I am not able to edit my post for some reason.
