That is the correct way.

Important note: DO NOT tighten the knob all of the way as the post will put pressure behind the emblem and over time, the emblem push up through the urethane coating.

Anyhow, looks great! Told you guys he does good work

I know this is an old thread but I am new. I have an 07 xj8. The knob will turn very tightly but appears to be attached to the chrome plinth. I don't appear to have an appropriately sized Allen wrench to remove the three screws I assume are in the three holes that are in the plinth or guide nut. Does anyone remember a similar situation? Obviously I have to hit the hardware store tomorrow for the wrenches.

Hi Jim,

There are no screws in those holes - they are apparently for some special 3-prong tool that Jaguar uses to hold the cone nut while the knob is tightened against it. With enough force, you may be able to turn both the knob and cone nut off the gear shift lever, but if not, try holding the cone nut with Vise Grip/Mole Grip pliers padded with something like an old leather belt to protect the cone nut from damage.

I replaced our XJR knob with a burled walnut knob and had to modify the cone nut. I don't know if the photos at the link below will be at all helpful, but in case they may help you see how things go together, here they are:

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but trying to confirm how to remove the cone nut from an x350? Does the cone nut just twist off with enough brute force or is there some type of adjustment screw I'm not seeing?

Hi Mike,

The cone nut serves as a "jam nut" against the knob, so don't try to twist them off together. Hold the cone nut as stationary as you can while twisting the knob off counter-clockwise, then twist the cone nut off.

Cheers,

Don

Saul at British Autowood | Dashboard and Woodwork Restoration made this knob for me. Stunning piece of craftsmanship.
