Default Anyone replaced the Rack and Pinion?

Happened to notice some fluid around the boot end near outer tie rod. Squeezed the boot a bit and more came out. Checked fluid level and a little low. Not leaking a lot at the moment, but I am assuming the seal near inner tie rod is leaking so rack needs replacing. Going to pick up a rebuilt unit and wondering if anyone here has replaced one and ran into any issues that they may have some tips or pointers to share. I don't have a lift so I will be under the car on Jack stands. Don't know any independents close and dealer is just ridiculously priced. I've replaced the rack on my ram with no issues but there was also a lot more room to work with.

I haven't replaced the rack on the XJ, but I have loosened/lowered it to replace a motor mount or transmission lines. There is plenty of room under the car, I think R&R is very straightforward.

Hi

Did it on jack stands two years ago. Fun!!

Let me dig up some pix and notes and will send more. As I recall the toughest part was lifting rack mount "tabs" into chassis and getting bolts in with various shims falling out -ha ha. I remember using rope to suspend it close to final location then much easier

I also replace P/S pump and lines, praying they did not leak. Tight fit with hands and wrench but took my time and cursed alot

Hi

Just realized I was on the X358 thread and not the XJ6 SIII thread. I did the rack on my 86 not on my 08 XJ8

Sorry bout that

The 'steering gear' for the XJ:
Center steering wheel and lock in position
remove tie rod ends
remove air deflector
remove steering column connectors
Detach power steering lines
Remove steering gear

Book time is 1.6 hours + alignment + other parts along the way. Doesn't seem too bad. Just a lot of working on your back.

The outer tie rods on any R&P just thread onto a solid steel rod? There is no fluid at the outer tie rods at all?
Did you mean the inner tie rods?

No. Not sure why it is called be-rod. But I assume it is calling for removal as it is attached to the knuckle and needs to come off.

Thanks for the new term? I also don't know why they call it a Be-Rod? Maybe someone can fill us in?
Yes they are talking about the fluid lines to the rack as those must be undone to remove the rack. Those lines are in the middle section of the rack.

It is leaking from the rack seal and into the boot. I noticed a little fluid where the end of the inner tie rod meets the "be-rod" (which I called the outer tie-rod). I squeeze the boot and power steering fluid came out from inside the boot. So I believe that seal is shot inside and the rack needs replacing.

Yes I think your right. Yes replace the rack as I don't bother trying to replace any parts on R&P anymore.
Get one with a warranty.
Have you found one?
