My car just gave me a COMMUNICATIONS ERROR message related to the Bluetooth Phone not working properly. I just bought the car 6 days ago. I had an auto parts store check the battery, starter, and alternator. They said the battery could use some charging, but it tested OK and the starter and alternator also tested OK. The battery is an Interstate battery that based on the date stamp looks like it is from January 2015 with a 6-year performance guarantee on it. So, the battery is coming up on 5 years old next month.
If the error doesn't resolve itself on the next cycle of the key, I would start by checking the connections to the fiber optic D2B network to make sure they are seated well. I'd start with the modules in the trunk since they are easy to get to. If that doesn't solve it, move to the head unit. The last time I had a similar issue, the phone module gave me that error, and the amplifier also disappeared from the audio settings. Restarted the car, everything came back.
Yes. Prior to getting this error, it kept telling me that the Phone was turned OFF, even though it was on and connected to Bluetooth. After getting the COMMUNICATION Error, it has seemed to corrected itself after the next ignition cycle.
