Default center cubby lid latch

Has anyone disassembled their center cubby lid or know how to do it? The latch on my lid has no spring tension and it comes undone regularly and the lid comes up some which is annoying. I can't tell how to take the bottom black plastic off or how to get the cup holder lid off to try to get at the latch. I see some little black circles on the bottom that may cover screws, but haven't yet tried to pry them out. This is not the sliding lid I see in the handbook but one with a cupholder cover that hinges forward. Any ideas?

One could take a wad of paper and wedge it behind the latch. That should hold it in place for a good while.

If I recall, these latches are also sometimes on eBay for $20ish.

Thanks

Even though the diagram appears to be the sliding top cubby lid rather than the one in my car, I think I see the problem. Item number three is labeled latch foam and I bet if my cubby has the same thing it has, as the British say, perished. I also see that item 18 labeled telephone holster might come out to give a deeper cubby box; there isn't much room in it for anything besides a cell phone and a couple of pens.

It still doesn't show how it comes apart so Ill try the shop manual again to see if I missed something there.

edit: I looked again and there is no cubby information in the workshop manual and the owners manuals of 05, 06, and 07 all show the sliding top cubby lid and not the lid with the flip up cup holder cover mine has. Apparently another case of murphy's law number four - The repairman will never have seen a model quite like yours.

Ok. Sounds like you have rear climate control, which would indicate the other type of center console, the other type is with cup holders on top.

This would be the same as mine. The foam you mention should be able to be substituted with a wad of paper towel or cloth to keep the latch 'forward and down' and keep the lid secured.

I'll see if I can find a photo to share.

Thanks

I re-read your post and if I recall correctly, the latch is secured to a metal rod with plastic "c" shaped 'click-on' fasteners.

The latch snaps on/snaps off a thin 'bar' and is acts on pivot.

Update: Now that I have looked at this on my car, I may be thinking of the non-rear climate control version which I had repaired on an earlier vehicle.

Apologies on any confusion.

There are some spare armrests on ebay UK, for rear climate control that you could take parts from:

Thanks guys, So the latch may just pry off of a metal bar on this type of cubby also? That would make replacing the foam easy if so. The ebay photos don't show this, (but they do show the elaborate hinge mechanism on the aft end) so I went searching the usual suppliers and found one drawing similar to the diagram and one photo, neither of which show the back of the latch but do appear to show a notch on the sides. BTW, it is Jag part number C2C34128.

I may have to screw up the courage to pry on it to see if it comes off, but I have to think about it. Better to have a loose latch than a broken one.

I asked Jagbits if they know how it comes off and Don said he didn't know but that I might ask the jaguar forum. Told him I had.

Default update on cubby lid latch

I got up my courage to pry and the cubby latch does just pry off of two little .155" diameter bars, one on each side, and my latch had no foam at all (Item #3 on the diagram) behind it. Now to find a stiff piece of foam to put in there for the "spring" and snap the latch back on.

I cut the foam to the width of the middle depression in the cubby lid and long enough to fit inside the top of the latch and Success! No more cubby lid popping up by itself.

It doesn't look like the telephone caddy is removeable, though, because the catch for the latch is molded into it. We'll just have to live with a shallow cubby.

So...A fixed cubby latch and a clean MAF; not a bad start to the day.
