Here’s my rattle - this is the worst of it:

Here is my 'rattle', which (based on what I hear with the stethoscope) appears to be coming from the VVT area?
2 seconds and gone. No further rattle.... If I switch off and restart, no rattle at all?

I think I'll live with it!

Well yours sounds worse but not by a lot?

I would monitor it and if it gets no worse not bother with it.

Thats how loud and long as it goes - it’s gotten no worse over my first 6 months of ownership, and after adding the Archoil oil treatment, its sometimes much quieter.

It was about 18deg C (65degF) when that was taken, and strangely (to me at least), when its been colder, sometimes it’s quieter - I was expecting the opposite.

I’m planning on trying a flush and a 0w30 or 0w40 to see if that helps.

Please let us know how it goes....

I have an oil change coming up later this year and I am thinking of at least going to 5W40 (currently 5W30) in the hope that it will cope better with our 50 degree C summer heat?

Most wear occurs at start up, many newer vehicles use 0-30 to compensate for this.
As warm as it is there, 5-40 should be fine, 10-40 may be fine as well.
You may have less racket on start up with thicker oil, worth a try I M H O.
I have used 10-40 diesel motor oil, in my motorcycles for years.
Way more detergents, & anti wear additives, the trans uses the oil in the crank case.
Not sure, but it just might help, to clean the motor inside, if it stays warm outside.

Thanks Wingrider.
Hope I haven't started a thread that pulls us away from the OP's original query!
We've already had some solid opinions from Forum Veterans and what we need now is more evidence of how widespread this cold start 'death rattle' is?
