Default coil packs

was wondering if there is a difference in coil pacs for different years 04/05s ihave had have Delphi. I have coils from a 06 that are ford --is 1 or the other better ,can 1 replace the other,can they be mixed and matched ---------thanks

04-09 is the year range that the same style of COP was used. Numerous manufacturers produce these, however, internal construction (quality) is not the same between all vendors. Can you mix vendors? Well yes, but I would suggest spending the $250 or so to replace all eight COP's with a quality matched set of replacements. The very cheap Chinese coils flooding the market these days is not something I would suggest. GM's Delphi, Ford's Motorcraft, Standard, Airtex, Beck-Arnley all make a decent coil, as does Jaguar OE. (Denso, but no longer made)

Agree on the issues with some cheap coils. Have had transmission issues with an old coil that triggered misfire codes. Changed to cheap coils, still had transmission issues. Changed to good coils, issues went away.

thanks that's kinda what I wanted to here .I to have tried off brands no luck.i kinda buy salvage and hurt jaguars (mainly x350) I have now 3 cars worth of parts (need to make classified add on this site) also you are right about misfires causing trans problems just made a post about my experience --thanks for the info

Hi Mark,

I agree with David that the best course is to replace all eight coils with new ones, but if you don't want to spend all that money at once you will probably be fine replacing only the faulty coil. Given manufacturing tolerances there is no guarantee that eight new coils will all be any closer in performance than one new coil with seven older Densos that are still in good working order.

When one of our coils failed I ordered a few types from Rock Auto to visually compare their quality. The Standard Motor Products and Beck/Arnley coils appeared to be made by the same vendor. They were nice heavy units with high-quality silicone boots. However, the Airtex/Wells coils were marked "FoMoCo," or Ford Motor Company, indicating that they are the coils Ford would supply if you bought them from a dealer. They may even be the coils Jaguar would sell you now that the Denso coils are no longer available. And the great news is that the Airtex/Wells 5C1420 coils are only $31.79 each at Rock Auto. I've replaced two failed Densos so far and keep two of the new Airtex coils in the trunk as spares.

P.S. Not to be too pedantic, but the coils in the X350 are not "coil packs," which have multiple coils in one package with high-voltage cables running to two or more spark plugs. The X350 uses a Coil-On-Plug (COP) or Coil-Per-Cylinder (CPC) ignition system with an individual coil for each cylinder attached directly to the spark plug, most accurately called an On-Plug-Coil (OPC) but commonly just called a "coil."
