Door speaker failure

Door speaker failure
I tackled my non-functioning door speakers today in my '04 XJR. Both right door mid-bass speakers were out although the tweeters were working. The wiring diagram shows both these speakers run off the same channel on the amp so I figured it was the speaker.
The door panel gave me some trouble. It was actually very simple, 4 screws and pull it off, but I wasn't expecting to have to use as much force as I did. I don't know if the panels were stuck because they've never been off before, or if they are just that tight, but I stopped several times to consult the workshop manual and make sure I had all the screws out. My trim tool wouldn't do it and I finally worked up to a pickle fork before it popped off.
I tried another speaker and it worked, and I had read in another thread that the connections in the speaker itself go bad sometimes, so I jumped a wire from the input directly to the wires going to the voice coil and it worked. I took both speakers and soldered jumper wires to the voice coil leads and everything seems good now.

I fixed all four of mine in December the same way. This seems to be a problem on all of these speakers. Mine were corroded between the soldered connection and the point where they were glued to the stand-off. I assumed it was the solder they used, but someone else suggested it may be the glue instead.

completed my speaker repairs yesterday
I finally had a chance to do this to my speakers yesterday. Over time all four of my door speakers had stopped working. just like kaug said "Mine were corroded between the soldered connection and the point where they were glued to the stand-off." the copper wire was corroded at the standoff.
the door panels in my x350 are the highest quality and design i've ever seen! i was nervous until i got the first one off.
thank your for the starting this thread and posting the pic gmcgann.

on my 2004 vanden plas there is one screw behind the inside door handle, below the tweeter. it is hidden behind a small plastic plug. you will need a torx bit for this screw.
there are two philips head screws below the door pull handle
there is one plastic clip on the very bottom of the panel, on the hinge side of the light. unscrew the plastic philips head screw 3 or 4 turns and the clip will pull out.

My two back door(s) rears main speakers are not working but the tweeters are (2005 Super) Any trick to the rear door panel removal? As with many do not want to screw anything up. But I suspect this is my problem too. Seems there is allot of these cars that have this same exact problem. Thank you GMCGann for the post!

This is for front door panel removal, but the rear door panel is very similar. Once you remove the bolts, I found that starting at the bottom of the panel near the speaker is the best way to release the plugs. If you look at the pics, the green things are where the plugs go that you will need to release.
Note that the picture does not show that you have to remove a plastic plug at the bottom center of the door.

Thank you. Worked just perfect. Now have all speakers working. The dash pad speaker reinstall resulted in the trim panel sort of self-destructing I think due to age. i used very little pressure to reinsert it. Best source for a replacement? It is the left side and is a tan color. (2006 VDP)
