Fault codes P0171 and P174 after attempted smoke check
2004 XJ8
Sorry for this is a rather convoluted story....
It was time for a smog check. Before taking the car to the shop I want to verify it's clean of fault codes, so I connect my OBD reader and find there is one fault code: P1111. I worry a bit until I learn in this forum that P1111 is a "good" code indicating all tests have run. The reader shows a yellow light, though; I'm not sure I've seen it before. But indeed P1111 is the only fault code. So I happily take the car to the smog check.
I sit in the waiting room for 10 minutes. The mechanic comes in to tell me the car cannot be smog-checked because there is one fault code (P1111). I argue with him this is a Jaguar code meaning....yada, yada... I show him the the post explaining P1111 on my iPhone. He is not persuaded. He pulls the car back from the shop, no charge, and I decide I'll take it to a different smog check station.
BUT about two miles into it I get a check engine light!
I pull in into a parking lot, connect my OBD reader and find a P0171 and a P0174. I google them up and they have to do with the engine running too lean. An attempted smog check and new fault codes cannot be independent events. I don't believe in this sort of coincidences. Something the mechanic touched (voluntarily or accidentally) or something he did over the OBD interface caused this. I reluctantly clear the codes (I know it will now take forever to run all the tests and be smog-check-ready again). Drive a few miles with the OBD reader connected and I see a P0171 first, then P0174
The car has been running as smoothly as before.... until I get a "restricted performance" or something to that effect. If I clear the fault codes the car runs fine again (for a while)
Anybody would venture any idea what could have caused this?
Thanks in advance

The two codes indicate an air leak affecting both banks therefore
examine the connections and tighten around the TB.
ie the areas which are common to both banks.

Oddly it happened on the way home from the Dealer. Oil Change and Rotation
I'd check the air path from filter to throttle-body...they probably "checked" your air filter and mayn't have got everything back together just so.
Thank you! And my bad for not having done an exhaustive search first.
Now, back to P1111. Can someone point to an official Jaguar document that explains this fault code simply means that all test have completed? As I said, at the smog check station they did not consider the Jaguar forum authoritative enough.
That is not a good sign,as so goes Calf so goes, so goes the rest of the country, yet another way to fleece the public.
When all systems go through their check, & clear routines, the numbers go to 1111 on the 04, that seems to be it.
The 07 says, this vehicle has no codes.
Maybe you got a person, that does not know any better. That numbers are are all you will get, when all is well, call and ask.
Might get good news, sure hope so.
Two years the 04 passed the tail pipe test with very low numbers. Found, & fixed the issue that kept causing the light to come on, when i asked if i could get a tail pipe test like last time,if i signed the same waiver, had things had not been fixed? Was told, THAT'S NO LONGER AN OPTION, guess things changed at the end of that year.
Any way ASK , Best of luck to you

Second, the Jag docs are in the workshop manual and I expect also the correct OBD PDF is on JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource
Third, the smog test should be checking the status of each of the supported OBD II monitors (via a standard OBD II mechanism) - you can be sure they're all OK as P1111 says so.
I guess you know that your state appears to have useless testers and/or test equipment (as well as somewhat daft OBD / "smog" requirements).
Maybe there's a way to appeal a wrong decision - basically to someone who actually has a clue rather than the people/testers you've suffered so far.

Thank you all for your assistance. I am driving the car and there are two tests that are still to complete. This has been two weeks of driving already. How long should it take for all tests to complete? Is there any kind of "driving style" that would accelerate the process?
Also, I am curious about the comment on "pending". My understanding is a pending trouble code (say a "P0101 Pending") will keep the smog station from even starting the smog test.

I had to put almost 2 full tanks of gas through to reset my codes.I followed a couple of drive cycles I found online and incorporated information gleaned from this forum. Call around to get someone who knows about Jaguars. I was able to get my 04 to pass with the P1111 showing. It was not a problem (I went to a nearby place called EzSmog). I actually put more miles on my car to pass smog than I usually drive in 2 months. Good luck and post any problems you may have getting a particular code to clear. It was very difficult for me to get the Comp. Component Monitor test to set. (The Powertrain DTC Summaries you can download offer detailed information about the P1111.)
Thank you Rancheroguy.
I wonder if I should our should have not cleared the codes when I got those two (P0171 and P0174) when the cover of the air filter came loose. The engine light had not gone on. And the codes did read "pending"; does that mean that they would have cleared automatically some time after the air cleaner assembly was fixed? Good to know for next time if they'd clear on their own sooner than getting every test run again.
And again the question: if you have a pending trouble code, but no engine light is the car accepted for the smog test?

I am no expert but I do believe they would "clear" (actually they would stay in memory but not set a off the MIL) It is my practice to check the DTCs for anything that needs attention. I knew I had a problem with either coils or spark plugs due to "pending codes" and what I determined to be the mileage at the time. The codes went from pending to setting the MIL an I had the Christmas tree lights oon the dashboard when my battery went bad. Everything was cleared when it was replaced, in spite of trying to connect a motorcycle battery into the system to keep the codes and other settings. I would check with the smog tech about pending codes as they should not trigger a fail but what do I know. I have both my son's Taurus and my Jaguar checked at the same shop and am pretty sure I could have passed with 1 code set (as long as it is not the Comp. Component Monitor code). Your area in California may differ. You can check online to see for sure. Good luck.
I own both 2004 Jaguar XJ8 and 2003 Jaguar S-type. My Jag P0171 and P0174 lean codes occurred after I replaced one bad fuel injector. I assumed the cause was resulted from air leak. Yes, it was from air leak after I performed smoke test. However, I still got P0171 and P0174 code with restriction performance once in a while even all air leaks were fixed. I swapped out the MAF sensor and P0171 and P0174 did not occurred again.
Check if you plug to MAF sensor is fully seated.
P0171 and P0174 could cause by 1. low fuel pressure (bad fuel pump or dirty fuel filter) 2. air leaks 3. dirty or defect MAF sensor

Pending codes should be ignored by smog stations. They don't set the MIL. Huge numbers of Ford cars and many Jaguars all have P1111 and of course go through smog tests OK.
