When I returned to my 06 Jaguar XJ8 to go to lunch today, it would not start. I looked at the gears and noticed that the R light was illuminated even tho the knob was in the Park position. After investigating, I discovered that my car is not going into park. After using the release button to release the gear knob it will go through all the gears, but would not come out of reverse. I had to put the knob over in the 5th gear position in order to take a big screwdriver and move the white plastic assembly to get my car to go into gear. Any ideas guys?

Might be that one or both of the bolts I think you car has that hold the shift cable to the trans side is loose/missing.

+1 on the two bolts missing on the shifter cable under the car and alongside the g'box.

Look on the floor under the car and on your drive for the bolts!
