Default Headlamps Occasionally Flicker or Shut Off

I have an 04 XJR and my right side headlight blinks and some times shuts off for 5-10 seconds AND on occasion BOTH lights have shut off, would you guys have any suggestions?

Hi OnebadassXJR,

I've moved your post from an old, unrelated thread to start your own thread.

The most common contributors to these symptoms are corrosion on the ground points behind the headlamps, and failing ballasts (assuming your XJR has HID headlamps).

The ground points are a common cause of electrical gremlins because they serve numerous circuits, and it only takes a very thin layer of aluminum oxide to add considerable electrical resistance to all these circuits. For details on cleaning these grounds, see this link:

Earth / Ground Points Near Headlamps

The ballasts are mounted on the undersides of the headlamp assemblies. The ballasts are made by Valeo and your '04 probably has the 12-pin connector version. Later cars have only 4-pin connectors, which are significantly less expensive. Conversion harnesses are available but you will lose the headlamp aiming function if your car is so equipped.

Cheers,

Don

Not only the above, but the lighting switch on the steering binnacle is a known failure point. This switch is not hugely expensive and takes about 10-15 minutes to swap-out.

I had the flickering a little while ago. I replace the ballasts/control unit things in the base of the light housing, didn't sort the issue. Replacing the HID/Xenon bulbs did.

Bright as day again, reliably so.

***EDIT***

Here is how I did it without removing the bumper:

I had flickering from one light, didn't have the lights shut off though.
Changed the HID lamps/bulbs and no more flickering.

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and redid my ground posts, sanded all surfaces and re installed grounds with grease and so far so good I'll keep you all updated.
