Question help w/ code!

Hi all!

My 2000 XJ8 running in restricted performance & gave fault P0305 which is cylinder misfire in #5.

I can't seem to find much to troubleshoot this code.

Probable causes given:
1) ignition wires and/or plugs
2) vacuum leak
3) injector fault
4) fuel pressure

Any ideas where best to start in lieu of taking her in a shop? It has 45K miles so I doubt seriously is plugs/wires.

All help appreciated!

Thanks!

It is not uncommon for the ignition coil to go bad. Find #5 and swap it with another coil and see if your moved to it before you begin to look elsewhere.

Hi JKK

You're not really on the right forum for your car, this one is for post 2003 XJs. However..........

For your car (steel body rather than aluminium), it is fairly common for the igniition coil, (one above each spark plug), to suffer failures from time to time.

I also suggest checking the injector (use a noid light to be sure it's gettign a signal) and coil for #5, I also would do a compression test to see if the cylinder is up to snuff and the rings and valves are sealing correctly. The ususal is to move the coil or injector to another cylinder and see if the fault moves with it.
