Default I can't believe this is happening

Hello,
Last night after a little shopping around I purchased a very clean 2006 Super V8.
I thought I had made a great choice and the 40 mile drive home confirmed that.

This morning I got in and started it up. I shifted into reverse and backed up a bit and then shifted into drive. It seemed strange like it was still in reverse so I shifted into park and was going to start over. Now it's stuck in park and won't shift out but the R is illuminated indicating it thinks it's still in reverse. It won't start and won't shift out of the park position. I understand it won't start because it thinks it's in reverse.

I just read a thread on here about a similar issue. The possible causes brought up were the linkage not properly connected at the transmission or an electrical/solenoid problem within the shifter. Given my particular circumstance - stuck in park with "R" lit up on the shifter, can anyone advise what the cause may be?
Thanks in advance

There's a couple of bolts underneath that hold the linkage in place. Put loctite on them and tighten up. There's a couple of threads on here about how to do it.

Sorry, but I'm on the app, so I can't find the links.

Good luck.

I did find those threads and they cover the exact problem I'm having. I'm going to crawl underneath it now.
Thanks!

Thanks!
If one has fallen out pull the other and take to an Ace or other full service hardware store. They are normal metric bolts. Should be easy to find a replacement.
I tightened mine after seeing this problem listed online. One was a little loose.
If the bolts are tight, you have a real problem.

A couple people who have had this problem in the past said look underneath the car and you may find the bolt. I looked and there it was. I got underneath and rotated the bracket back into alignment and felt the tranny shift into park. Secured the bolts with locktite and all is good.
This was not how I was hoping to begin my Jag owning experience but I was relieved that it was a very simple fix and not some complicated and expensive issue.
Total cost to me was that of the hand cleaner I used afterward.

Also, the internet is a great thing.

Sure is, learned a lot here, sometimes hard to get your head around some issues. But chances someone has had a similar issue, & may have an inexpensive, simple, solution.

Amen. I'd probably be driving a Toyota Camry if it wasn't for this forum.

I appreciate the help. I have been driving a MINI Cooper S for a few years and got valuable assistance on those forums and was able to help others in a few instances. I'm glad to have found a similar community for Jag owners.

That's the idea. Take and then give back. Enjoy the big cat!

After seeing this topic too many times, I pulled and re loctite'ed the bolts BEFORE I was stranded. This cleared the worry of "not if, but when". This should be one of the first checks after purchasing the car. You only have to do it once, and avoid looking on the ground for the bolts WHEN they do back out.
