Default If a Throttle body is going out....does it make a sound?

And if so..... What does it sound like. I got a bunch of fault codes driving my kid home from playschool. .Before, engine sounded nice. No issues. Suddenly, there is a loud whine coming from the engine bay on the passenger side that begins from startup and continues through rev range. Then the codes lite up, felt like the brakes were locking up on their own. I did do a pretty hard merge onto a freeway from 3rd gear. Not with kid in the car. But I did like the pull. Anyhooo, Could that have caused something to go on the Throttle body? Could it be a throttle body or TPS issue? I read on another post that the sudden fault codes were a symptom caused by a bad TPS? Any ideas or opinions would be helpful. Oh...for my just acquired 2005 XJ VDP with 56k on the tach.

Thanks.
R.

Read the codes. There are plenty of things that can make a noise, I'd not guess at TB without more reason.

Hi Cherry,

I'm not the expert, but mine did not make noise like that. The error messages came up and it went into Limp Home mode. It did NOT feel like the brakes were being applied. Typically, a shutdown and restart would clear it. Ultimately I replaced the Throttle Body with a new one from Gaudin Jaguar (nice guys) and all problems disappeared.

I would think if it's a loud whine, can't you open the hood & have someone rev the engine while you're looking? Usually a loud, unusual noise is fairly easy to diagnose. Considering the perceived braking issue, it seems to me that you have a pretty severe problem; finding it <should> be fairly easy. I hope fixing it is too.

Good luck.

HAHAHAHAHA.....OK..OK... Here is my theory on what is going on with BigDaddy . First, I must really like the F..Jaguar line since I can find humor in all of this and still want one. I have had this '05 XJ VDP for eight days. I've put about 50 miles on it. During my test drive and check, nothing "leaped" out at me. We made it ours and brought it home..so far..here's what has happened. Air strut has developed a leak. (If this ever happens.....FIX IT !!!lol....Compressor must have been under constant stress for ??who knows how long?? and constantly needs to supply air to busted strut. Alternator needs to constantly supply battery with energy to run compressor. Eventually, alternator develops loud bearing squeal and also begins to not charge the battery. Soon, battery is going dead, fault codes go off because system is loosing communication with components and car goes into limp mode. Then freaked out owner sells car and new owner (that would be me) puts newly acquired XJ VDP in his garage and begin to drill down into A bunch of forum posts trying to find the answer to the problem. When new owner tells partner owner wife of all the things that might be wrong....all hell breaks loose and I begin to doubt my manhood. So why do I think that the everything will drop as I predict? Because, when I went to start the car this morning, the battery was dead. I charged it, and car cranked back up. The leak in their if strut. It is a sloooooowwwww leak when the temp is above freezing, but that leak makes itself apparent when it's freaking cold outside like it has been. I think when I take the car in this next Tuesday, the awesomeness of this forum will show itself. Ill let you know what ends up getting fixed. I hope They get a a "throttle body is fried" code and get that out of the way. Glad I got the extended warranty.

The typical throttle body failure simply puts the motor into a high idle (about 1000rpm). You also get the check engine light, and sometimes a park brake fail light. It is always intermittent, so it will never show failed while actually at the service station.

Best of luck with the rest of the items...

Crap. At least I found out from a post on this forum where to get them for a reasonable price. Like I said, this forum is invaluable and has lots of information if you are willing to dig.
