Default Inconsistent fuel guage indicator

Hi
The fuel gauge indicator has begun to act inconsistently.
Sometimes it rises on ignition and sometimes does not.
moreover in mid journey it sometimes falls and fuel light goes on.
How can i keep it up?

Do i need a new sensor or just a clean?

viagra?🤣

The car should have 2 sensors in the fuel tank, and the fuel gauge basically shows an average of the signal of the two sensors. If one of them is defective, it can lead to an erratic behaviour of the gauge.

To access the sensors, you need to remove the rear seat bench, and underneath you will see two black round plastic covers. The fuel tank sensors are under these. Please be aware that one of the fuel sensors is integrating the fuel pump.

Best regards,

Thomas

Thanks sir
How do i know if they both need replacing or just cleaning? Or just one of them?
are they expensive and easily found parts?
thanks

You will need a multimeter to measure the resistance to see which on eis defective. Do you have the workshop manual? In it the related tests and values are described.

As for the price and availability, I do not know, sorry.

Apart from this, there are also some DTCs/error codes related to the fuel gauge, but you will need a code reader to be able to see whether these are shown. These error codes, if existing, can also pinpoint to the defect.

Best regards,

Thomas

This is a known problem due to bad contacts on the gauges I believe.
You might getaway with just cleaning them.
Gauge just clips onto the side of the pump 'bucket'
Lots of info if you google it

Check for codes, mine were B1202, & B2627 on my 04.
Technical Bulletin XJ310-1 Dated 04/4 Amended07/04.
Tells you about this issue on some 04's.
C2C 31125, & C2C31126 were the parts needed to fix mine.
Went ahead & used a Delphi fuel pump kit, DEL-38-K4014
To replace the actual fuel pump while in there

Mine does something similar and it always happens when I have filled the tank. After a few minutes driving it will, occasionally, drop to empty and idiot light comes on and then after a few miles it sorts its self out again.

Enjoy things while you can, mine acted the same way a good while.
Then progressed to pretty much all the time giving bad information.
Emissions readings rely on the fuel level imputs.
So i had to repair things, instead of using miles traveled, & m p g.

Update

i put in a fuel cleaner additive and it has solved the problem now. Engine also purring nicer.
for a month now the petrol gauge is functioning normally.
obviously a cleaning wad needed. I hope i don't need to change sensors but I've bought one just in case
Thanks for advice.
