Intermittent Automatic Steering Column - Memory
I have an intermittent problem with my X350's steering column and driver seat position controlled by the memory. It all stopped working last Summer, but now the steering column positions itself under memory control sometimes. The seats have not resumed working properly under memory control.
The steering column resumes working whenever the outside temperature is in the 30s. The seat only moves by memory control after you get it and put the key in the ignition and then only moves back.
Let me summarize:
Began last Summer --[*]Open driver door - no movement from the driver seat[*]Get in, close door and put key in ignition[*]No movement from steering wheel or seat[LIST=1][*]Driver seat can be adjusted manually. All movement is smooth and continuous[*]Steering wheel can be adjusted in small half inch increments using the adjustment stalk in both Auto and Manual positions
When temperature is in the 30s( but not always) -[*]Open driver door - no movement from the driver seat[*]Get in, close door and put key in ignition[*]Steering wheel drops down and adjusts the reach according to setting in memory[*]Steering wheel can be adjusted manually. It moves smoothly and consistently to the desired position.[*]Driver seat will then (sometimes) move backwards to its limit and stop
Has anyone experienced something similar? Looking at the wiring diagram it appears that the modules involved in this operation are the Driver Door Module and the Instrument Cluster and could be caused by a flaky module and/or an intermittent connection somewhere.
I haven't torn into this much because of the weather since I have to work on the XJ8 without the benefit of any cover.
All advice will be appreciated.

I've got something similar right now. Memory settings for mirror and for steering column/control pedals works, but not the seat settings, or at least not all of them. Shop are looking at it now, but if it's expensive, I'll live with it.
Please post the shop's diagnosis. It could be very enlightening.
I had similar issues with my seat. I think as noted in the below thread, I knocked it out of limit. Read below.
