need nav disk info please
ok so i have what i assume is the original nav disk which is waaaaaaaay outdated here in NY and is driving me crazy... So my question is this.. Which is the current and latest disk aaaaaaaaaand (here comes the kicker) can I burn a copy and will it play and function properly? I am NOT paying 100$+ for this disk.. Is any other car navi disk compatable? maybe some ford cars or something? Thanks chaps

ok so I tried a little experiment and burned a copy of the nav disk onto a dual layer dvd .. The burn looked like it completed properly and there were no errors but when I put the disk in it gives an error saying " insert map disk" .. Now why wouldnt it read the disk? I dont get it.. Does anyone know the type a media they use to make these disks ? I used a dvd+r dl. maybe its dvd-r dl? any clues or ideas?

I suspect it has more to do with the defaults of the package used to do the burning and the options chosen.
I use Roxio Creator Basic.

2010 is the latest and the best (it also comes with a small firmware update for your headunit) but I understand that a 2012 should be coming in October.
Oh, and no there are no other discs that will work, other brand vehicle wise. These are made specifically for these heads units/vehicle models. The good ness is you can sell your old disc on eBay!

The maps from my X350 work in my wife's Subaru and I have also used a Toyota sourced map disk in mine.

Interesting info as I never had luck with swapping discs between Jag models. Also if I am not mistaken, the head unit is made by Toyota as are many other electronic components in our cars!
The discs are only a couple hundred bucks from Navtec the actual manufacturer for nav discs and they are not worth updating annually as the changes can be fairly minor. I have the 2010 and looking forward to the 2012.

The basic structure of the data on the nav disc is defined by a consortium of different electronic companies which is why some discs can be used in multiple cars.
Kiwi-W Consortium
I wonder if there will be an new features and firmware released.

Totally mandatory . I had zero control over it. As soon as I turned the car on and put the disk in it went into auto pilot which is cool with me. I can't see a firmware update being bad for us. I did notice that when I had the screen on the jaguar logo screen it was green and now somehow it's black... I kind of liked the green but otherwise the only thing I notice is that it added daytime running lights ... Also the screen seems a bit clearer then before...

When you insert a map disk the nav unit checks what version it is. If it is later than the currently running firmware it will look for a file called loading.kwi. If it finds it, it loads it and that is how the firmware gets updated.
Not all map disks have the file on so if for some reason you didn't want to update your firmware you could copy the files off the new nav disk on to a PC, delete loading.kwi then burn them back on to a new DVD.
That assumes that the new firmware isn't required due to a fundamental change to the map data.
There is also a button in the nav units hidden diagnostic menu call 'Auto S/W update'. If you press it, the button surround turns red so this may be a way of turning off the auto update. Unfortunately it only lasts for one igniton cycle so would be a bit labour intensive to use it all the time!
Not sure why you would want to do any of this anyway but in theory it is possible.

the only reason I would prefer not to upgrade is that I don't care for daytime running lights. My car (04 xjr) came without the disc(have no idea what version is on it). I have been slowly trying to get my system in working order as the c-pillar water leak(before I purchased) took out the amplifier and dvd player, while the navigation and cd changer seem to be operational and interior free of water stains. But I digress..

The upgrade just adds a button in one of the menus that allows you to alter the default for the daytime running lights. I think the default is off anyway so it won't affect you.
