The trans code could be false, due to being upset by an engine issue, or of course it could be genuine.

TCM & PCM co-operate via network packets, same as lots of the car.

The PCM relies on the sensors and so in effect does the trans, via the PCM's packets.

The smoke/smell would be what I'd focus on but I don't see how you can post a smell. Maybe a jag indy would know what it could be.

Thanks JagV8, I will concentrate on that. As for the smell it 100% smells like burning rubber. I have read somewhere that fully synthetic oil when burning smells of rubber; having said that, I have also read that tranny oil does too!

I am going to post a very brief video of my Cam Cover venting when the PCV is momentarily pulled in case someone will recognise whether this venting is excessive or not and I am going to fit an Oil Catcher just because I think it cannot do anything but help?
Regards,
Ray

I don't think there's anywhere that trans fluid can burn. (OK, what I mean is it's very very unlikely.)

Oil that drips onto a hot part of the exhaust might be it?

Burning oil has never seemed like rubber to me but it's not something I've much encountered.

Thanks JagV8 - I am going to put a small drop of 5W-30 oil in a small pan and stick a hot soldering iron into it - See what it smells like!

UPDATE: 5W-30 Fully Synthetic oil (when burning) has the acrid, pungent smell of rubber burning!

Regards,
Ray

Sounds like that soldering iron has been abused!

Hello JagV8 - Guilty as charged; however, It has survived the admitted abuse!
At least I now know that the PCV system is the most likely culprit. At some point I had better try to get a compression test - Although I have to say that (apart from these sporadic bursts of grey smoke), my engine appears fine and pulls extremely well, without smoking? Certainly fitting an Oil Catcher should help?

Ray

I suppose it would help with a symptom but the cause may be the valve.

Thanks JagV8. I have been trying to establish how to test a PCV for some time (see following post). For all that I have been able to understand, my PCV is functioning correctly?? There does not appear to be a definitive method to test the valve? What I cannot understand is, if it is okay, why all the occasional smoke?

JagV8, in the end, it might just be worth the £30 to buy plus £20 to ship a new PCV - Just to know once and for all whether this is the route cause of my problem?!!
Regards,
Ray
