Default Passenger mirror memory issue

I just looked thru 17 pages with the search, and could not find a solution.
My passenger mirror does not respond to "auto dip" function, may not be programed. This I can handle. But it will not respond to the memory settings. It works fine manualy thru the switch pack, but no memory setting movement.
Mirrors auto fold fine. Drivers side functions perfectly.
I did read about resetting the peramiters (mirror position reset process), but there was no process listed. Could the peramiters/potentiometer be maxed out by someone manually moving the mirror glass by hand? If so, why would I have full movement by using the switchpack switch?
I would like to fix this, then either have the auto dip feature turned on, or just set one of the memory buttons to a dipped setting. It's getting to be a real pain setting the mirror every time my wife drives my car. Plus, a SV8 is reeeally long , and dipped mirrors can help protect the 19" rims from damage.
I would like to avoid having to do a full reset with the battery, unless this has worked to reset their mirror memory function. Its a real pain to start it up after a full reset.
Thanks

Mark,

According to the Owner's Manual, the dip function can be programmed for either or both outside mirrors by the dealer, but if you have SDD and an appropriate interface cable you can do it yourself (I set only the passenger mirror to dip).

As far as the memory function goes, my guess would be a problem with one or both position sensors in the mirror or their electrical circuit. There are several Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for mirror position sensor problems, but they're proprietary Jaguar "B" (Body) codes, so they can't be read by a standard OBDII scanner - it takes Jaguar SDD or a high-end third-party system capable of reading Jaguar codes.

I'm attaching the DTC Summaries below so you can see the various problems a code might help you diagnose (codes B2314-B2337 could be relevant).

You can download the 2006 Electrical Guide here:

Cheers,

Don

I played around with the mirror today and found the following:
It will go back to memory if I move it either way out or way in.
It will not go back to memory if I move it down or up.
No auto dip function set by the dealer.
Drivers side works as advertised. (full memory return)
I will keep exersizing it daily and see what happens in the mean time.
Are there proximinty sensors on it? (up,down, left, right)
Any thoughts out there?

Hi Mark,

There are position sensors for up/down and left/right - see my previous post for the link to the Electrical Guide and the DTC summaries. If you have SDD or a scanner that can read the Jaguar B (Body) fault codes, you may find one or more that point to the problem.

Cheers,

Don

Take out the glass, wash out the pivots with warm water spray and soft paintbrush and a trace of shampoo, allow to dry, spray with WD40, refit.

For some reason the autodip on mine works better when it is moving freely. It might be that the stiffness makes a sensor think it is jammed. You might as well clean the foldback pivots at the same time. Put a large cloth or towel over the door to protect it from dirt, grit and lube.

And how would one take out the glass to access these pivots?

You lift out the edge with your fingertips.

There is a video or photos somewhere, I would have to find them to remind me whether you pull the inboard or the outboard edge. IIRC the outboard. Somebody will know. It pops into round plastic poppers, like a child's plastic necklace. Easier than you might think. Leave the wires connected while you work, and use that towel to prevent it marking the door.

Mine was exactly that way in terms of what you described in your 1st post, when I bought my car. I bought a motor for the mirror on eBay for $40, & voila. Memory & dip function bliss

(I think sometimes we make things a bit too complicated)

I got over a $1000 off the Jag when I purchased it because it had the ABS/DSC faults on the MIL. I told the owner that this is the ABS module most likely and that's about $1500 to replace with labour, even with a second hand module.

It actually turned out to be one abs sensor not clean and sat incorrectly in its wheel housing. I cleaned the sensor, correctly refitted and wham, no more ABS/DSC fault.

Keep it simple stupid (kiss) saves you money in the long run.

Oh back to the thread, I will pop out my mirror and clean the contacts therein. Thanks for the info.

My car has somewhat of a different issue. Once in a while the passenger side mirror dips all the way down. I don't know what causes it but it's not a big deal since the fix takes about 5 seconds or so.

Hi Marque,

I'm glad that replacing the motor solved your problem, but the forums are full of reports from folks who bought new or used parts, sometimes costing hundreds and even thousands of dollars, that didn't resolve their problem. In your case, $40.00 was probably a reasonable risk to take, but in general, it's better to diagnose the actual problem first, if possible, to avoid wasting money on unneeded parts. That's not really "making things a bit too complicated," it's just being a prudent owner-mechanic.

The forums are also full of reports from folks who resolved their problems simply by cleaning electrical connectors or grounds at nearly zero cost....

With a Jaguar, there's always something else to spend money on. Why waste it on parts you don't need?

Cheers,

Don
