Rear Passenger Courtesy Lights Problem
I have an XJ6 2007 with a few problems which I am enjoying fixing thanks to the info on the forum. I have however one small one which has defeated me. The rear passenger lights stay on permanently. I have disconnected them to stop them draining the battery. All the other internal lights work perfectly. Any thoughts on where I should start looking.

Ah, you do realise that there are two parts, two bulbs, to each rear passenger light fitting ?
One is the bulb switched by the courtesy switch; the other is switched on and off manually by pressing the part of the light fitting that covers the bulb. Maybe it's the manual lamps that have been left on ?
Just a thought.

Right ...
Try this ...
Sit in the rear car with all the doors closed and wait until the courtesy lights in the front go out ... do the rear manual lights still work ?

Not what I was thinking then.
There was case some time back where the fittings had been removed and then refitted on the wrong sides ie LH fitting to RHS & v.v. The effect was that the courtesy lamps got the permanent supply and the manual lamps got the courtesy supply.

Looking at the circuit diagram what you describe would seem to indicate a permanent short to earth/ground on the return line from the lights to the the Rear Electronic Module (as with most lamps they are switched on the ground return side rather than on the +12v side).
However that would make the rear footwell lamps come on all the time as well because they share the same ground return line to the REM as the rear courtesy lights.

Okie-doke. As it happens I've just been out and had a look at mine.
If the handle-lamp units are on their correct side then the courtesy lamp is the rear one and the manual (reading) lamp is the one towards the front of the car.

My curiosity got the better of me so before I went to the airport I reversed the fittings and low and behold everything works. That was one of the best bit of detective work I have seen in a long time. You need to give yourself a clap on the back.
Thanks for all your help
Now I better move before I miss my flight.
If you are ever in Ireland I owe you at least a pint
Thanks again

Thanks, but I was simply recalling a discovery someone else made a year or three ago, maybe here, maybe on the UK/EU 350 forum.
I can't remember who it was now, but the credit's theirs.
