Default Rear View Mirror 2004 XJ8

My mirror does not have the compass button and the mirror button that turns both of these off and on. Instead it appears I have two what could be sensor where these buttons normally would be. 1) does this mean my 04 XJ8 is an early model and 2) are these in fact sensors? that sense when it is day or night and causes the mirror to go to the corrrect mode?
Thanks,
Bill

The sensor on the front of the mirror senses the ambient light. The sensor facing the rear of the car controls the mirror as a light comes toward the rear of the car and dims the mirrors. There is some confusion on which cars had the compass. My 04 does. If you have the touch screen nav, the car usually doesn't have the compass in the mirror, but a few reported that they did. Is strange indeed!

Thanks, Lew. Thought so; the owners manual only references the mirror with the two buttons so I determined those had to be sensores for that purpose but wanted to make sure. I do have the compass..I just don't have the buttons to turn both compass and mirrors off and on. Other than that all works fine.

I have an 04 with navigation and also have the mirror with compass and buttons. Must be based on Vin #'s.

Hi ragman,

My assumption is that your car is already wired for the compass feature, but I'd be happy to pull our compass mirror to check the electrical connectors if you want to do the same so we can compare notes.

Cheers,

Don

Absolutely! I will try to get to it tonight as it's dead at work right now. I've got a 130 pc tool kit and a flashlight! TYVM!!!

The current mirror has Auto dimmer with Auto and Off buttons along with the sensors on both sides. Here's the pics to the current wiring:

Jason,

Here's a photo of the wiring for our '04 XJR with Compass mirror. The round component on the windshield/screen is the Rain Sensing Module for the automatic wipers:

And here's a view of the connector on the Compass mirror itself. Note that there is a row of 4 pins on the left, but on the right there are only 2 pins at the outer points of the connector:

Cheers,

Don

Ty Don. I'll check the pins asap. Got a busy night ahead tonight. I looked up the official part # from the EPC and it shows no compass with my VIN code range... I have the Nav, but prefer the mirror.

It is possible to upgrade a standard auto dimming mirror to one with compass, as I did this with mine. Just plugged in on mine.

I got the mirror with the plastic back (cover) for $52 from a breaker on eBay. It was, just as many said, plug-n-play. I didn't need to make any adjustments to it and it's accurate. Saving the old one, JIC, but so far, I'm liking having it back!
