Default Removing engine w/ tranny still attached

Has anyone tried this? I know the service manual says to remove the tranny first, but this looks like a tough assignment without a lift.

To do that, Ideally the whole lot would need to be dropped out from underneath, rather than lifted out through the top, and that means removing the front Subframe and most of the front suspension, This is the usual way to replace an engine, or even a clutch in most front wheel drive cars, but then on those the engine and box are normally mounted to the chassis, so the subframe can be removed, then the engine and gearbox as a unit can be dropped out.

So you could drop the whole lot in one big lump, remove the exhaust and propshaft, disconnect everything, leaving the engine mounted to the subframe and then lift the body high enough to get the whole lump out from under it. Minus the heavy engine gearbox and front subframe/suspension, the body "should" be light enough for 2 or 3 people to lift and roll back. Alternatively, get it high enough rest it on stands and drag the lump out from under it.

Personally, I think that you might come out ahead by recruiting a reputable auto service center which is preferably staffed with seasoned mechanics to install the used engine.

Its possible. I had to do it 2.5 years ago. With no lift. It was tough, but basically I did what Brian mentioned.

Well I did it and it wasn't that hard, apart from a couple of upper bolts on the bell housing and freeing the transmission connector wire, just a matter of disconnecting all the hoses etc. and yanking that bad boy out.

Nice work!!!
Hope that is NEVER required on either of mine.
Pulled enough bike engines to last me a long time, which is a piece of cake next to this!!!!!!!!!!!
