Default Restricted Performance issues

Called in to see my friends at Prestige Jaguar today as I've been getting an intermittent Restricted Performance message and it goes into limp mode.

Ths generally only seems to happen when the ambient temp is brrrrr cold and you want to get somewhere in a hurry.
You step on the loud pedal and once up around 80 mph or maybe a little more, bam into restricted performance mode she goes.
I stress again though, only ever when its cold outside and a quick restart soon gets rid of any issues temporarily.

Dougie initially, before even seeing the car diagnosed a fault egr valve as they are quite common, but on inspection the codes came back as Mass air flow sensor issue.

The thought was bring it in to check and we'll see if we can't clean them and see how that goes before replacing anything.

Well, the car was in today for the MAF to be checked / cleaned

It turns out that they weren't actually too bad, but cleaned them anyway, however, the poorly fitted air filter may have been causing more of an issue.

MAF cleaned and new air filter £50 job done

Car "seems" fine so far, maybe even a little more responsive perhaps......tested on the way home and all seems fine so far, time will tell of course.

Hi Jim,

I'm not sure about diesels, but on the gas engines, if you clean up the throttle body that might improve the driveability. When it gets a bit warmer, I'll probably do that to my car as well as replace the air filter and clean MAF cleaner.

I thought that the diesels had a sort of "protection mode" that if the engine wasn't sufficiently warmed up and you have it too much throttle it would go into restricted performance.

I seem to recall BuckMR2 mentioned it once.

Some friends back in Switzerland have a Range Rover Sport with the same 2.7L engine, and it happened to them a few times in winter when leaving the house in the morning. I told them about this & to take it easy until it was warmed up, as far as I know it didn't happen since they give it time to warm up before giving it too much welly...

But if you had codes for the MAF, and the airbox was not properly closed, that might explain it...

Hi Cambo,
yes I'm fully aware of the "up to temp scenario" as mentioned by Buck and others.

To be fair that has happened once, perhaps twice, although as a general rule I always wait until my car is up to temp before letting loose a little.

This event could happen once the car was up to normal operating temps after driving for some time, but the outside ambient air temp was extremely cold as in winter time for example.

I could pretty much force the issue to appear at will if required as I knew the exact requirements to bring it on.

As stated, early days so far, but it certainly seems a little more responsive / eager ( seat of the pants dyno ) not that she's any slouch anyway and the issue did not reappear on the drive home....

I'll keep any eye on it and report back on any findings
