First, Im quite jealous of powered sunshades. Very cool.
Do you hear any other noises when it stops? And has it always made the click when it starts? Looking at the parts listing on Jaguars site they show that only whole motor unit available, so I suspect there may be a stripped gear in the motor unit. I dont have any experience with this (obviously), so Im not sure how hard it would be to repair. JBWeld may be your friend here.

I had a similar issue with my 2004 XJR. I was able to get a grip on the rail and give it four or five firm yanks upward, it lifts maybe 3-4 inches each time. That seemed to be enough to get whatever was stuck in there freed up and the ceiling control button would then get the shade to activate. I then sprayed some silicon lubricant along the rails in the "up" position and ran it up and down a few times to get things lubricated again. Haven't had a problem since. I run it every once in a while just to make sure it keeps running smoothly. I suspect these things are not used often and get dust and whatever in the mechanism in the closed position and after a while....gets too gummed up that the motor can't get it to release. Hope this helps.
I had very similar problem with mine. Sunshade would not move at all and was in lowered state.
I read different posts about applying brute force to lift rear sunshade up and I read few posts about broken side arms.
When it came to replace rear sounder, about three months in the ownership, I pulled rear seat and rear back seat, it took longer to find instructional posts on the forum. Then I pulled side C-pillar covering, after that parcel shelf comes out. The rear shade is attached to parcel shell.
Took it apart, cleaned, blew off all the dust and lubed and put it together. Works. At the same time I routed cable for rear camera properly behind headliner too.
BTW, I feel it was right decision to take it out completely instead for pulling it's arms. They seems to flimsy to me to withstand any force. I think some broken arms were caused by trying to lift sunshade by hand.

Mjcarch has the right idea. I did the same. In the back seat I reached over and pushed the shade button while at the same time pulled up firmly on the shade in my VDP and it rose up. Then I used a small paint brush to spread silicon lubricant in the upper track to aid in operation.
