Post Tire size, 2004 XJ8, Interchangeability question

Can I use a 225/55/ R17 on my car, I have a full set of Blizzacks I would like to put on this winter. The current tire on the car is the all season Pirelli 235/55/ R17?
Thanking you in advance for your help and advice.

I would sure think you will be OK with one size down. You might check the load capacity of the tires and verify you will not overload anything, but I really do not think you will even be close to overload, your car uses pretty large tires for the weight of the car.

Jim,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X350 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

There actually are 235/50 R17 Blizzacks available, what made you buy the narrower tyre ?
Having said that, I don't think it will make a huge amount of difference fitting a tyre that is 1 cm narrower than stock, after all these tyres are for winter driving at (usually) slower speeds. In fact I would think it makes no difference at all really !
Only thing I can think of is the tyre diameter may be different so your speedo may misread slightly. so check this out.

The difference will be speedo reading.
Also in the EU, the difference in perimeter would be out of tolerance and you wouldn't pass MOT or Technical Control.
The right size for 17" is 235/55/17

Wink Response to all

Thank you very much for your very helpful responses. I purchased the tires for a previous car. I will use them.

they generally recommend narrower winter tires anyway; better snow grip.

you can go to tirerack.com and they have lots of useful info on tire sizes that will fit, reviews etc.

I went on the site and the calculator figured it was within spec to do so.
Thanks again for your help.

Yes we did and it was very cold, I hope I don't have any starting issues.
Thanks

Normally starting issues when its very cold apply to diesels as the fuel waxes up.
